Brownfield Lady Cubs & Runnin’ Cubs

The Brownfield Lions Club and Rotary Club just had it’s first annual Brownfield Hoopin’ Cubs Classic. It was a tournament that featured on the girl’s side Brownfield, Idalou, Sunray, Abernathy, Coahoma, and Lubbock-Cooper JV. Before the tourney, the Lady Cubs started the week off with a 20-19 win over 4A Andrews. Unfortunately, during the Hoopin Cubs Classic, the Lady Cubs did not win a game losing to state-ranked Idalou 69-25, Coahoma 58-41, Sunray 52-38, and their final game on Saturday against Abernathy 54-30. After the tourney, the Lady Cubs have fallen to 4-11 on the season. Of course, tomorrow night, Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, District 3-3A will begin action and the Lady Cubs travel up to Dimmitt to take on the Bobbies. According to Dimmitt’s schedule, they’ve only played 8 games and are 2-6. With the Lady Cubs having more playing time and games, plus winning four games, don’t be surprised if they come home tomorrow night 1-0 in district. Since Brownfield is in a seven-team district, the Lady Cubs will not play a district game on Friday evening, instead they will take on 4A Snyder at home. The Lady Tigers post an 8-9 record currently and have lost a few close games to some good teams. This will be a great game between the Lady Cubs and Lady Tigers, and this could be another win for Brownfield.

The Runnin’ Cubs got last Tuesday off but hit the hardwood running in the Hoopin’ Cubs Classic. They won 3 of the 4 games they played winning over Coahoma 74-46, Lorenzo 69-60, and their third game of the tourney they lost to #13 4A LBK Estacado 68-54, and at one point in the game, they led the Matadors. Their final game on Saturday was LBK Monterey JV winning 61-53 which brings their current record to 8-5. Next up is 4A Levelland tomorrow Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, when they travel to take on the Lobos. Levelland is 7-7 on the season and has won against some good teams. However, this should be a good matchup for Brownfield. Both squads have one team in common so far and that is Slaton. The Lobos played about a week prior winning 62-53 and the Brownfield winning 67-51. So, something else to note, of the 14 games Levelland has played, six have been 3A schools, and two have been 5A. Brownfield on the other hand has taken on two 6A’s, three 5A’s, five 4A’s (two being state-ranked), three 3A’s, and one tough 1A. Experience will matter in this game. On Friday, they stay home and take on a 7-6 Big Spring which is one of the larger 4A’s in Texas. Again, like that of Levelland, Slaton is the common foe with the Steers winning 51-44. However, something to note, the Steers lost to Brownfield’s district rival Denver City 42-34 but won over another district foe Lamesa 57-53. The Runnin’ Cubs should improve to an 11-5 record heading into district action next week.

Meadow Lady Broncos & Broncos

The Lady Broncos are doing very well. They are sporting a 9-5 record, and if it hadn’t been for the loss to Kress 48-38 in their tourney, then Meadow would have had a seven-game winning streak. They beat 1A Springlake-Earth 52-47 last Tuesday, which is a tough little team. Then the Lady Broncos entered into the Meadow tourney playing on all cylinders beating Dawson 53-5, Southland 61-27, and then losing to Kress. They finished up beating their cross-county rival once again, 59-45. Of. course this leads the Lady Broncos into a huge district-opening matchup at home against the #11 Whateface Lady Lopes. This game is important, to say the least. Whiteface is 12-3 on the season with wins over Sudan and Gruver. That’s a pretty good resume. Meadow will have one thing on their side, the gym, it will be loud and proud. The Lady Broncos have got to play with intensity and keep the turnovers to a bare minimum. Every time they go to the line, they need to make those shots. This is a winnable game. It doesn’t get any easier on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, when they travel up to Whitharral to take on the #20 Lady Panthers. Whitharral is sporting a 12-1 record with a couple of key wins, one over O’Donnell 57-40 and Brownfield 51-25. Both teams have played Springlake-Earth, and Whitharral beat them also 64-42. Hopefully by the end of the evening oon Friday, the Lady Broncos will be 2-0 in district action.

The Broncos havent been as successful as the Lady Broncos. However, when your starting lineup is mainly freshmen and sophomores, its easy to see the issue. They do have a 5-7 record and have playing hard and with a lot of heart. It will take some time to get it down just right with all the youth on the team. Unfortunately, they had three straight losses, Springlake-Earth 74-33, Kress 53-13, and Southland 58-33. They did get two wins before the week was up beating Dawson and cross-county rival Wellman-Union. The Broncos take on the Lubbock Titans tomorrow night Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, at home. This will be their only game of the week. Next week they will begin district play.

Wellman-Union Lady Cats & Wildcats

The Lady Cats have improved their record which is now 6-7. Like that of the Meadoow boys, the Lady Cats are a very young team. Again when you start freshmen and sophomores and there are no seniors, its going to take some time to get things going in the direction Coach Bailey wants to see. However, do not count them out. Unlike the district Meadow is in, WU’s district has six teams, and the Lady Cats don’t begin district action until January 5, 2024. So they have a lot of games to play to get better before they take on Klondike. They entered the Meadow Tourney having lost to Crosbyton. However, they picked up two wins against Dawson and Southland. Tomorrow Tuesday Dec. 12, 2023 they stay at home to take on Southcrest Christian and then travel way over to Rotan on Friday to finish up their week of basketball.

The Wildcats got their first win on the season in the Meadow tourney beating Dawson. The team is now 1-11 on the season. Again, their losses have not been by very much, they are a young team and a new coach. Things will begin to swing in their direction soon, we’re sure. Tomorrow Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, the Wildcats will stay at home to take on Southcrest Christian and also travel way over to Rotan on Friday to finish up their week of basketball.
