Brownfield Lady Cubs (2-2, 6-16)
The Lady Cubs made a powerful statement on Friday night by defeating Lamesa 33-32. The message was clear: “Don’t give up!” Both teams showcased strong defenses, with Lamesa allowing only four points in the first quarter and the Lady Cubs allowing just six points. It wasn’t until around the 5:30 mark that either team managed to score. The Lady Cubs outscored Lamesa in the second quarter, 10-8, resulting in a tie of 14-all at halftime.ll at the half.
In the third quarter, Lamesa scored first; however, Brownfield responded with a 6-0 run, giving them a cushion as they led 20-16. Lamesa fought back and ended the third quarter with a tied score of 24-24. As the fourth quarter began, Lamesa again scored first, but #31 Maya Martinez hit a three-pointer, putting Brownfield ahead 27-26. Both teams were tied 32-32 at the one-minute mark. Lamesa fouled #3 Lucy Guzman, who went to the free-throw line and made one shot, giving Brownfield a 33-32 lead. Time ran out for Lamesa, and the Lady Cubs improved their record.
Lucy Guzman was the top point scorer with 16 points, and Maya Martinez was next with eight.
The Lady Cubs will travel to Coahoma on Tuesday, January 7th, to face their next opponent. The Bulldogettes currently hold the top spot in the district with a record of 4-0 and an overall record of 16-4. They have recently entered the top 25 rankings. This game will be challenging for the Lady Cubs, as the Bulldogettes are averaging about 44 points per game while allowing only 32. In comparison, the Lady Cubs average 40 points per game but allow 58. It’s important to note that the Lady Cubs have faced seven top-25 teams so far this season.
On Friday evening, Brownfield will host Crane in a home game. Both teams currently have a district record of 2-2, tying them for fourth place. Their overall records are similar; however, Crane has faced one top-25 team this season. They have been averaging 33 points per game while allowing 42. By the end of the week, the Lady Cubs could potentially move into third place in the district standings.ld be sitting in the third spot in district.

#13 Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs (3-0, 15-7)
The Runnin’ Cubs completed their sweep of Lamesa on Friday night, winning the game 65-37. Brownfield started strong, leading 20-4 at the end of the first quarter. However, Coach McPherson had the Runnin’ Cubs ease off a bit, allowing Lamesa to outscore them 11-6, ending the first half with a score of 26-15 in favor of Brownfield.
As the third quarter began, the Runnin’ Cubs regained control, winning the quarter 19-11. They maintained their momentum in the fourth quarter, ultimately winning the game 65-37.
#12 Jeron Lawrence led the points with 32. #11 Trea Timmins was next with 10 points.
This week, the Runnin’ Cubs continue their district action with a road game against Coahoma on Tuesday night. Brownfield sits at the top of the district standings, with Coahoma just one game behind at 2-0. The two teams faced each other during the Hoopin’ Cubs Classic on December 13th, where Brownfield won decisively by 41 points, finishing 83-42. The Runnin’ Cubs will play away this time, presenting a different environment.
Coahoma is averaging 53 points per game while allowing 54. In contrast, the Runnin’ Cubs are averaging 64 points per game and allowing 56.
On Friday night, the Runnin’ Cubs will host Crane. The Golden Cranes have not won any district games this season, sitting at 0-2 and with an overall record of 3-6. Crane has qualified for the playoffs nine times in the last decade, demonstrating their competitive history. Currently, Crane averages 51 points per game while allowing 60.

Meadow Lady Broncos (1-0, 12-7)
The Lady Broncos began their district run with a victory over cross-county rival Wellman-Union on Friday night, winning 51-44. Both teams played tough, but Meadow prevailed. Now, the Lady Broncos will travel to take on Anton, who is also 1-0 in district play. The Lady Bulldogs have been averaging 45 points per game while allowing 35. In comparison, the Lady Broncos have been scoring 43 points per game and allowing 41.
On paper, this should be a close match since some of their opponents are the same. For instance, Meadow lost to Hart 53-41, while Anton won against them 60-35, with only 10 days separating these games.
After their matchup with Anton, Meadow will return home on Friday night to face Cotton Center, who has a record of 3-17 and 0-1 in district play after losing to #16 Whiteface 73-19. The Lady Elks are struggling offensively, averaging only 23 points per game while allowing 38.
By the end of the week, the Lady Broncos could head into next week’s game with a record of 3-0, potentially facing off against 3-0 Whitharral.
Wellman-Union Lady Cats (0-1, 10-10)
The Lady Cats did not start their district season as they had hoped, suffering a 51-44 loss to their cross-county rival, Meadow. With this defeat, the Lady Cats are now 0-1 and will be traveling to take on #16 Whitharral in their second district matchup. The Lady Panthers have achieved some significant victories against strong teams, along with a few narrow losses to excellent schools. For the Lady Cats to upset Whitharral, they will need to perform at nearly their best. Currently, the Lady Panthers are averaging 55 points per game while allowing 38, whereas the Lady Cats are averaging 38 points per game and allowing 37.
Friday night the Lady Cats will host Anton. The Lady Bulldogs have been averaging 45 points per game while allowing 35.

Meadow Broncos (0-0, 8-12)
The Broncos are currently on a three-game losing streak and are hoping to turn things around tomorrow night when they travel to Loop to face the 18-1 Longhorns, who arguably deserve a spot in the top 25 of Class 1A. In their previous matchup, the Broncos lost to Loop with a score of 62-50. The Longhorns are averaging 69 points per game while allowing only 43.
The Broncos will finally kick off district play on Friday night when they host Cotton Center. The Elks are believed to be 0-16 this season, scoring around 22 points per game and allowing 61. Meadow has been getting 40 points agame and allowing 49. The Broncos should be able to start their district run with a record of 1-0.
Wellman-Union Wildcats (0-0, 7-11)
During the holiday season, it can be challenging to schedule games for smaller school teams. The Wildcats have experienced this firsthand, as their last two scheduled games were canceled by the opposing teams. With a current record of 7-11, the Wildcats need these games to prepare for the upcoming district play. On Tuesday night, barring any cancellations, they are set to face the West Texas Tornados, a homeschool team from Slaton that boasts a strong 9-3 record. The Wildcats are hopeful to get some valuable playing time on Tuesday night.
On Friday night, the Wildcats will open district play at home against the Anton Bulldogs, who have a record of 4-9 and are currently on a four-game losing streak. However, this could change before they face the Wildcats. The teams have similar statistics: the Bulldogs average 48 points per game and allow 52, while the Wildcats average 47 points and allow 51. Hopefully, when the final buzzer sounds on Friday night, the Wildcats will emerge with a 1-0 record in district play.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the outcome of that game. It’s also worth noting that District 4-2A has three teams in the Top 20.
