Brownfield, Meadow and Wellman-Union enter this week’s games with different challenges and a common goal: cleaner, more consistent play. The Cubs will host Crane for homecoming, the Broncos will face a battle-tested Ira team, and the Wildcats will look to build on their homecoming win as they take on Klondike.
Brownfield Cubs

The Brownfield Cubs showed progress last week, forcing four turnovers on defense and turning one into a score.
The offense also moved the ball and reached the end zone, but coach Lawrence Johnson said big plays in the run game and a lack of consistent play across all three phases kept Brownfield from putting together a complete performance.
As the Cubs (1-3) prepare to host Crane (3-1) for homecoming Friday night, Johnson said the focus is on playing with urgency and discipline, particularly by cutting down on penalties that extend opponents’ drives.
The coaching staff spent the weekend simplifying the game plan to give players a better chance to execute. “I’m looking forward to seeing our guys respond and believe we can win in the process,” Johnson said.

Meadow Broncos
The Meadow Broncos showed grit in their latest game despite costly turnovers, defensive miscues and injuries to key players, coach Blake Jackson said. Brayson Parker rushed 22 times for 237 yards and two touchdowns, completed two of four passes for 62 yards and two scores, and added an interception on defense. Isaac Estrada caught two passes for 57 yards and a touchdown, while EJ Piedra had four catches for 54 yards and eight tackles. Lucas Vazquez caught a seven-yard touchdown pass and led the defense with 11 tackles.
Meadow now turns its attention to Ira, a team Jackson said has been tested by a tough schedule and is stronger than its record suggests. The Broncos will focus on taking better care of the ball and slowing Ira’s offense.
Wellman-Union Wildcats

The Wellman-Union Wildcats bounced back from two difficult weeks with a homecoming win over Highland. Gabe rushed for 255 yards and three touchdowns, while Edgar threw for 103 yards and four scores. A.J. caught two touchdown passes, and Braxton and Gabe each caught one.
Coach Brett Labadie praised the team’s play on both sides of the ball and said that, despite a handful of self-inflicted mistakes, the Wildcats kept competing throughout all four quarters.
Wellman-Union now faces Klondike, which Labadie described as a physical, talented team. He said the matchup will be a tough test and a chance for his players to compete against a high-caliber opponent.

Week 5 Texas High School Football Ranking
TownTalk Media uses Dave Campbell’s Texas Football as the primary source for its weekly high school football rankings. After the preseason polls are released, the rankings move to a Top 10 format in every classification except Class 6A.
For six-man football, TownTalk Media uses two different ranking sources. Based on feedback from local six-man coaches, many consider SixManFootball.com the more accurate ranking system, so we include its Top 25 rankings. We also continue to use Dave Campbell’s Texas Football (TexasFootball.com), which publishes a Top 10 for six-man football.
NOTE: In Classes 6A through 3A, Region I teams are shown highlighted in yellow. In Classes 2A and 1A, teams shown highlighted in yellow are Region I teams, while teams highlighted in blue are from Region II.
