One of the three boys high school basketball teams will be heading to the playoffs this postseason and that is the Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs. The Meadow Broncos finished out their regular season last night, Monday, Feb. 12 against a tough Whitharral squad and lost 60-11 and would end up 0-10 in district action. The Wellman-Union Wildcats also finished their regular season last night with a loss to Sands 75-15, and finished in district 2-8. Both teams struggled this season, mainly due to youth, inexperience, and size. Wellman-Union also did not have a full-time coach during the season. However, both squads can look to next season as they will be in the same district and we’ll get to see another season of cross-county rivals. Both squads should be better and will most likely see them in playoffs.
Moving on to the Runnin’ Cubs. Brownfield finished their regular season last Friday winning Dimmitt 46-26. They finished district 11-1 and are tied with Littlefield who are 10-1 and have one more game tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 13 against Dimmitt. In the first round of district, Littlefield won 81-44. if Littlefield wins tonight, then Brownfield and the Wildcats have a seeding game scheduled for Friday, Feb. 16, 2024 tipoff at 7:00 p.m. at Liberty High School. If Littlefield loses, then Brownfield wins the district and gets the first seed.
Here is the possible playoff scenario for the Runnin’ Cubs. Like Brownfield and Littlefield, district 4-3A, the bi-district for District 3-3A, Alpine, and Presidio both have one loss in district and will most likely play for a seeding game. Those two teams are already in the playoffs. Kermit, no matter the outcome of tonight’s game against Crane, will still be the 3rd seed. Stanton which is 5-6 in district will play Tornillo which is 3-8 in district. It will not matter if Stanton loses, they will still be the 4th seed. If Brownfield ends up playing Littlefield on Friday and wins, they will take on Stanton, if they lose they will take on Kermit.
