Brownfield Lady Cubs & Runnin’ Cubs
Another week on the hardwood for Terry County schools and by week’s end, each team will be in district action. Beginning with Brownfield Lady Cubs, they have become a force to be reckoned with. They had two great wins last week and look to continue that streak going into Muleshoe tomorrow night. The Lady Cubs sit at 3-1 in district with wins over Lamesa 31-26 and Friona 65-25, not to mention they sit at number 2 in district. They’ve done this with a couple of key players out due to injuries. Hopefully, come tipoff time tomorrow night Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2023, tipoff 6:00 p.m. they’ll be healed and ready to go.
The Cubs travel over to Muleshoe who sit at the bottom in district with a 1-3 record. Their one win came against Friona 50-43. They have lost to Lamesa 61-21, Denver City 51-49, and Dimmitt 40-38. Although the Lady Cubs have won over three of the four teams Muleshoe has played, they still need to stay consistent and tough. The Lady Cubs will finish the week off with a home game against Denver City, which is currently 2-2 in district. The Fillies have wins over Friona 60-35 and Muleshoe 51-49. Their losses were to Littlefield 47-41 and Lamesa 49-44. This game will round out the first round of district competition for the Lady Cubs.

Well, the Runnin’ Cubs again did not crack the top-25 in Class 3A. Of course, this could be a blessing in disguise. The Runnin’ Cubs are coming off two great solid wins against Lamesa 74-50 and Friona 66-31. These two games allowed Coach McPherson to play the whole bench. Right now they sit atop in district at 3-0 and are healthy. Like the Lady Cubs, the boys head to Muleshoe tomorrow night also. Honestly, the Mules have become a rival of Brownfield, at least on the football field, and on the court… well, there are no helmets and pads.
The Mules, like their girls’ team, sit at the bottom of District 3-3A with a 0-2 record losing to Denver City 57-51 and Dimmitt 62-53. With the Runnin’ Cubs on top of the district, the Mules are going to want to knock them off. Brownfield will most likely deal with high emotions from the Mules. The Runnin’ Cubs will finish the week at home against arch-rival Denver City. The Mustangs sit in the second spot at 2-0 in district with wins over Friona 52-47 and Muleshoe 57-51. Last season, Denver City came to Brownfield and won and the Runnin’ Cubs will most likely not let that happen this time.

Meadow Lady Broncos & Broncos
The Lady Broncos were able to notch a nice win in district against Morton 46-43 and improve their district record to 2-2. This puts them in third right now. Next up is Cotton Center. Although the Lady Broncos will play against Cotton Center, this will be a forfeit for the Lady Elks, so this will automatically move Meadow to 3-2 in district before they finish up the week against Anton. The Lady Bulldogs are sitting at 1-3 in district as of right now. Their one win came from a forfeit of Cotton Center. Their three losses have been to Morton 43-36, #7 Whiteface 67-15, and #8 Whitharral 69-13. Nonetheless, the Lady Broncos will still need to stay the course.
The Broncos had their district opener last week against Morton and it didn’t go as they had hoped dropping the game. Tomorrow night, the Broncos will not play a game since Cotton Center has forfeited. They also did not pick up a game as well. So their next game will be against Anton which is 0-2 in district with losses to Whiteface 62-27 and Whitharral 82-43. With a forfeit from Cotton Center, the Broncos will head to Anton 1-1, and hopefully come out with a win and be 2-1. Again, most of the players from Meadow are freshmen and sophomores. There are no seniors.

Wellman-Union Lady Cats & Wildcats
Unfortunately, the Lady Cats dropped their district opener last Friday to Klondike 75-36, and it doesn’t get any easier with taking on Sands tomorrow night, Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2023, at 6:30 in Ackerly. The Lady Stangs won a State Title a couple of years ago, and when things like that happen, it breeds more success. However, this is why you play the game. The Lady Cats could easily win tomorrow night. They finish the week up against Dawson at home. The Lady Dragons are back on the hardwood after a year of them not being. Dawson is 4-14 overall and 0-1 in district. This should be a good game for the Lady Cats.
The Wildcats continue to struggle, however, they will take on Sharp Academy tomorrow night because they don’t begin district until Friday, Jan. 12, 2023. The Dawson Dragons are coming off a year of not playing varsity ball. The Wildcats should open district with a good win.
