Approximately 5:30 am the Brownfield Fire and Rescue was called out to rollover on US 62/385 less than a mile north east of Wellman. According to the Texas Dept. of Public safety, Abel Ruiz Hernandez, 73 of Lubbock was driving a 2010 Honda Fit south on 62/385 and entered a construction zone, which required Hernandez to travel in the left lane. Hernandez left the roadway into the center median, where he overcorrected to the right. Hernandez again overcorrected back to the left, and the Honda entered the center median again, went into a side skid, and then rolled. The Honda came to rest on its driver’s side in the northbound lanes of US 62/385. A passenger, Jessica Leigh Hernandez, 50 of Lubbock was ejected and pronounced deceased on scene by Terry County Justice of the Peace Angie Garza as a result of the injuries she sustained during the crash. According to law enforcement, Hernandez was wearing a seat belt and Jessica was not wearing a seat belt.
The Terry Co. Sheriff’s Dept., BRMC EMS, Brownfield Fire & Rescue, Wellman Volunteer Fire Dept., Texas DPS, and TxDOT responded to the scene.
