Making a Difference

I have had the minor characters of the Bible on my mind recently. Bit players who step in and step out, but make a difference while they are there. Can you name these bit players? Not likely, since they are just there for a moment!

One that comes to mind is the guy who just stepped in for a second to tell Joseph he had seen has brothers that day and where Joseph could find them. If it had not been for him, Joseph may have not found his brothers, he might not have been sold to the slave traders, and he might not have become second in command in all of Egypt and been responsible for saving them all, including his own family, from starvation. Just a bit player. A bit player who was in the right place at the right time.

How about Paul’s nephew win the New Testament? Do you know of him? He overheard a plot to kill Paul and alerted Paul and the authorities. Without him, much of the New Testament might never have been written. Just a little boy who loved Paul and recognized that there were those who wanted to hurt him.

In 1Kings is the story of the “Man of God” who was misled by a prophet and it ended up costing him his life. This story of unnamed men reminds us that we need to always be sure we are seeking Godly counsel.

In Acts, we find the story of the Ethiopian eunuch who was studying God’s word in the chariot. Philip came by and explained it all to the man. The Ethiopian accepted the Savior and was baptized that very day. And, “Philip was caught away, the eunuch saw him no more.” Just a reminder that we have to be ready to share God’s Word with those we meet because we might not get another chance.

The point of all this is to say, there are no small roles in God’s plan. We each have a part to play, even if it may seem to you to be unimportant. All our roles are important. You see the preacher. You see the youth minister. You see the worship leader. You see all those on stage. But do you ever see Russell up in the balcony making sure all the sound is just right, and the video is running as it should? You may never see him, but his role is not small!

Are you playing your part? Whether it is in the lead, or maybe a smaller “walk on” part. All the pieces contribute to the result! Start asking God where He wants you and what He wants you to do! It will make a difference!
