It is a cold “feels like winter” day today. I don’t mind it too much. I am fairly content with whatever weather we have. I am not crazy about the wind, but it is not totally annoying to me either! There is not much we can do about the weather. Being content makes life go a lot easier.
Paul wrote in the book of Philippians, “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” We are all familiar with the last part of these verses. We see it written on athlete’s shoes, or as tattoos often. But what we usually see is “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” What the verse actually says is that Paul has learned to be content, no matter the situation and that God gives him the strength to do this.
Being content is hard for many people. We live in a world that is constantly wanting more. Nothing is ever enough. On social media, no one ever seems to be satisfied. Someone is always doing something irritating to someone else, so it must be shared! Being content is a pretty foreign concept for many people these days. Recognizing that you are content is all about counting your blessings.
When you take the time to look around at how blessed you are, contentment with what you have should come easy. Don’t misunderstand me. I am not saying to quit working to better yourself. Just don’t let that theme be all-consuming! Recognize the value of each day and of each person whom God has placed in your path.
As we come into the giving time of year, don’t let it become the “getting” time of year for you and your family. Look for ways to help others who are not as fortunate as you. Heck! Even if you see yourself as one of the less fortunate, find ways to serve God by serving others. That will lead to contentment.
There is always contentment living inside God’s will and God’s way. Don’t strive for so much that you miss what is right in front of you. Count your blessings! Even though you can’t count that high!
Be content with life today. It will make a difference!
