I get an email each day from “This Day in History.” It is always very interesting and I often find out things I did not know. You should find it! I think you would enjoy it. Today, one of the history items was that “On this day in 1861, West Union completed the first transcontinental telegraph line.” Maybe that seems like a yawner to you, but what struck me was that the telegraph was not even 100 years old when I was born! So much has changed in my lifetime. We have gone from party line telephones hanging on the wall, to cell phones in our pockets that do everything imaginable, and oh by the way, you can actually use them for telephones.
The first flight of the Wright Brothers was just over 50 years before I was born and now we have satellites flying around and are sending people up to space stations to live. I remember a man at the nursing home telling me about the first time he rode in a car “with glass all the way around.” Meaning windows with glass. What brought that up was that he was busy watching the Indy 500 where cars that in no way (other than four tires) resemble that car he first rode in. The times, they are a’changin’ as they say.
All the changes in our world can be overwhelming at times. Computers are still scary. People are still afraid one wrong click will send our country into a massive blackout. Change is not an easy thing to handle. And life seems to change daily.
But the thing that never changes is, or course, God’s love for us. Nothing in His Word has ever changed. I believe the Bible is true from beginning to end. There is an old preacher buried at the cemetery here. On his headstone it says, “To the maps.” He always said he believed the Bible from Genesis to the maps. I do too. I also believe that if He ever called it wrong, it still is. Man’s opinion or “political correctness” do not matter. If He called it wrong, we can’t change it.
The other thing that is so true in the Bible is the promises that God makes to His people. He has promised to be with us. And He is. He has promised to watch over us. And He does. He has promised to forgive us. And He does, when we ask with a repentant heart. He has promised us eternal life with Him. And we have that once we ask Jesus to live in our heart and ask for His forgiveness for our sins and promise to try to walk with Him daily. That eternal life will never change for those who have accepted Jesus. It doesn’t matter what is going on in the world around us and what changes we might be in for today. God is on His throne. Jesus lives in my heart (and I hope yours!). And eternity is secure.
When change is just too much for you, rest in the comfort of the unchanging grace of our loving Father. It will make a difference!
