Making a Difference

Do you have any spoons in your life? I am not talking about in your silverware or utensil drawer! I am talking about living, breathing spoons. Spoons in your life that like to keep the pot stirred! You know the type. Always trying to start trouble under the guise of just being a good friend or taking care of business, etc. Spoons!!

I think we all have people in our lives that seem to always want to stir the pot. Never satisfied when things are running smoothly. I don’t know if I coined the term “spoon” or if it was from somewhere else, but spoon seems to fit.

I like things to run smoothly. I do not like conflict or controversy. I like my sky to be blue with fluffy white clouds and my grass nice and green and birds singing in the trees. Idyllic, I guess. As long as we live, there will be controversy. There will be conflict. And there will be spoons. What matters is how we choose to deal with this.

As God’s kids here on earth, we are to make a difference where we are. We are to be peacemakers. In fact, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus specifically says, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God.” Wow! That sounds great. To be called the sons of God is an amazing title. I like having peacemakers in my life. People that can talk me down when I am most irritated. People that can bring a voice of reason to my thoughts that are distracted by what has upset me. People that remind me of my purpose on this earth.

Actually, there are two types of spoons. In God’s Word, in 1 Timothy 1:6-7, Paul writes, That is why I would remind you to stir up the [gracious] gift of God, [the inner fire] that is in you.” See? A good spoon! As Christians, we are to keep our own fire stirred to serve God, and we are to encourage those around us to keep their fire stirred. An unstirred fire will eventually burn itself out!

So, I ask you now. Which kind of spoon are you? Are you the kind that causes trouble and dissension every where you go? Or are you the type of spoon that is here to encourage others and keep the fire for serving God stirred and burning brightly?

We are here to make a difference in this world! Choose which spoon you will be!
