We got more rain last night. What a blessing it has been. One of my farmer buddies said, “Its hard to imagine how dry we were a month ago and how different this year looked then from what it does now.” He is not wrong. Things were very desperate for our farmers here. A couple of drought years in a row, and what was shaping up to be another, made the future look very bleak.
As I watched and listened to the thunder and lightning, I was reminded of the goodness and greatness of our Father. My word! The lightning just flashed around me over and over. The thunder sounded like great rocks falling and crashing. It was amazing. I watched and listened from my garage. In the middle of the loud, loud thunder and flashing skies, I could hear frogs making their sounds. Such a small little creature out there just singing his heart out because God had also blessed him with some rain. It made me think of the verse in the Bible in 1 Kings 19 where God told Elijah to stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord. He says, “The Lord is about to pass by.”
“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”
There was lots of wind and noise and shaking and fire, but the gentleness of God came in a whisper. Certainly, God was in the wonderful thunderstorm last night, but the sweetness of the frogs’ singing was where the gentleness of God was found. Sometimes we have to be still and quiet to hear God. Even in the midst of all that is going on around us, we have to be still and listen for the sweetness of God’s voice. Oh, what a loving Father He is!!
When the storms of life are swirling around you, be still and listen for the gentle whisper. When you are feeling overwhelmed with all that is facing you, listen for the gentle whisper. In that whisper, you find peace. In that whisper, you find comfort. In that whisper, you find God.
Listen for the gentle whisper of our loving Father. It will make a difference!
