The much talked about and anticipated match-up between the Brownfield Lady Cubs and the Monterey Lady Plainsmen gave the fans everything they wanted on the way to a Monterey 60-58 victory.
Social media was buzzing about the game weeks before the Tuesday, December 7 match-up.
The Lady Plainsmen boast a freshman phenom in Aaliyah Chavez. Chavez is already being talked up as a top D-1 prospect, even though she has four more years of high school ball.
The Lady Cubs, though, had weapons of their own. Gabi Fields, who has already signed to play D-1 ball with Northern Colorado, and of course, the Johnson twins – Deja and Tia, who have committed to Lubbock Christian University. Lindsey Herrera, the toughest little point guard around, round out the stars from the 2021 State Championship team. Dabria Blackwell was in street clothes on the bench with an undisclosed injury. Ashlee Ramirez started in place of Dabria. Also seeing action was freshman Shyla Blackwell.
The Lady Cubs jumped out to an early lead, finishing the first quarter with a 25-20 lead. Gabi had 12 points in the first quarter, nine of those coming on 3-pointers.
The Ladies went into the half with a 34 – 29 lead.
The second half found Monterey beginning to find their way, scoring 23 points in the third quarter to the Lady Cubs’ 14.
The Lady Cubs outscored the Lady Plainsmen 10-8 in the fourth, but could not find the basket as the buzzer sounded, leaving the score 60-58.
Chavez had 31 points for Monterey.
Gabi led the Lady Cubs with 27 points, with Tia following up with 10.
Kelly Mora also pitched in 12 for Monterey.
The huge sellout crowd was energized and supporting their teams all night long. Everyone had a great night and left knowing they had seen a great game.
