The Brownfield Lady Cubs and Runnin’ Cubs came into Friday night’s game against Muleshoe, both coming off a loss to Littlefield. Unfortunately, the Lady Cubs took another punch to the chin as they fell 62-41 to the Lady Mules.

Even at home, the Lady Cubs could not get the ball to fall. Brownfield was outscored 13-8 in the 1st quarter. However, it wasn’t until the 2nd quarter that things began to fall apart for the Lady Cubs. They were outscored in the 2nd 17-6 and were only 2 for 12 from the charity stripe. Brownfield went into halftime down by 18 points 32-14.

When the 3rd quarter came around, the Lady Cubs still could not get things rolling as they were outscored 20-8 and Muleshoe busted four 3-pointers, and the score going into the fourth was 50-22 in Muleshoe’s favor. In the 4th quarter, the Lady Cubs found some life by outscoring Muleshoe 19-12, but it was not enough to come back. Unlike the 2nd quarter, the Lady Cubs were 9 for 11 from the free throw line in the 4th. The Lady Cubs lost 62-41.

The top scorers were Freshman #1 Alliey Coffey with 12 points, notably 8 of the points were from free throws. Sophomore KK Finnen followed up with 7 points, all from the first half.

The Runnin’ Cubs were hoping for some redemption against the Mules after the football loss in regular season and the playoffs, and they got to do just that by winning 46-36. Although a low-scoring game, both defenses stood strong and Brownfield could only drop three 3’s throughout the whole game. The Runnin’ Cubs ended the 1st quarter outscoring the Mules 7-6. In the 2nd quarter, both teams were playing with some high-intensity defense and tied their scoring at ten apiece, but the Runnin’ Cubs were still out front by one point 17-16 going into halftime.

Although Muleshoe’s defense was still stifling, the Runnin’ Cubs made some headway in the 3rd by outscoring the Mules 12-6 and Jo Jo Carrillo was able to get some excitement going as he busted a 3-pointer. In the 4th, Brownfeld was able to fend off the Mules outscoring them 17-14 and improving their district record to 4-1.

The top scorer for the Runnin’ Cubs was Junior #1 Jo Jo Carrillo with 21 points. Next was Senior #23 Malik Mason with 8 points and Freshman Jeron Lawrence with 8 points.

The Lady Cubs and Runnin’ Cubs will take on arch-rival Denver City at home Tuesday night January 17, 2023, with a tipoff time of 6:00 pm. For the Lady Cubs, this will be the first game of the back half of district and will be the last game of the front half of district for the Runnin’ Cubs.
