Both the Lady Cubs and Runnin’ Cubs hosted Stanton Tuesday night and had different outcomes.
The Lady Cubs set their eyes on the second round of district action, hoping to avenge their 61-46 loss to the Lady Buffs on December 3, 2024. Unfortunately for Brownfield, they faced a significant defeat, losing 69-23. Stanton came out strong and maintained their momentum throughout the game.

The Lady Buffs quickly built a commanding 14-0 lead before Lucy Guzman hit a three-pointer. They added to their score, closing the first quarter with a 21-3 advantage. In the second quarter, the Lady Cubs improved slightly, scoring five points, with Guzman making another three-pointer and LyTiona Fisher contributing by making both of her free throws. However, Stanton added 18 more points, leading 39-8 at halftime.
As the second half began, the Lady Cubs hoped their adjustments would turn the game around. However, Brownfield added five points to their score early in the half. Guzman scored again with a three-pointer and added a field goal. Stanton then tacked on another 16 points, ending the third quarter ahead 55-13.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Cubs had a much better performance, scoring 10 points. Most of these came from the free-throw line, with Guzman contributing three points, Aniah Baker adding two, Fisher scoring three, and Maya Martinez contributing one bucket. Meanwhile, Stanton scored 14 points in the quarter, ultimately winning the game 69-23.

The Lady Cubs are still in fourth place with district record of 3-4 and overall 7-19. The Lady Cubs will not have a game Friday night. Guzman led the Lady Cubs with 15 points, followed by Fisher with five.

The Runnin’ Cubs game was in stark contrast to the girls’ game. The Runnin’ Cubs came out strong, showcasing their status as the #5 team in the state, achieving their first 100-plus point game of the season. Brownfield started with an impressive 8-0 run, all points scored by Q Busby. Shortly after, Stanton managed to add some points to the scoreboard. However, Jeron Lawrence quickly took charge, contributing 15 points, with nine of those coming from three-pointers. Trae Timmins added four points with two layups, and Kam Gibson scored with a nice layup for two. Kanyon Cantrell rounded out the first quarter with two free throws, ending the quarter with the Runnin’ Cubs leading 31-9.

In the second quarter, the Runnin’ Cubs eased off a bit but still managed to add 23 points to the scoreboard. Lawrence once again led in scoring with 11 points, including two from the free throw line. Both Busby and Timmins added four points each with two layups. To finish the second quarter, Gibson and Joe Mata each contributed two points. Stanton added eight points, leaving the Runnin’ Cubs with a commanding lead of 54-17 at halftime.
Returning for the third quarter, the Runnin’ Cubs maintained their momentum, scoring 32 additional points. Cantrell and Lawrence both contributed eight points in this quarter. Joseph Bayless knocked down two three-pointers, while Busby and Gibson added four points each. John Feild finished the scoring in the third quarter with two points, bringing the score to 86-23.
In the fourth quarter, Coach McPherson sat most of the starters, but the bench players stepped up, scoring 21 points. Braylon “B-Money” Bruno had his third consecutive game with three three-pointers. Bayless, Jonah Franco, and Zyre Guzman each added three-pointers as well. Cantrell scored on a layup for two, and Franco added another point from the free throw line. The Runnin’ Cubs won decisively with a final score of 107-35, with every player on the bench scoring against Stanton.

Like the Lady Cubs, the Runnin’ Cubs will have a much-needed break this Friday. The team improves to 6-0 in district play and 18-7 overall. Jeron Lawrence led the team in scoring with 34 points, followed by Busby with 16 points and Cantrell with 12.
