The Brownfield Lady Cubs and #19 Runnin’ Cubs basketball teams came away with the sweep over Dimmitt last night in a set of District 3-3A games. The Lady Cubs upended the Bobbies 34-30 and the Runnin’ Cubs dominated the Bobcats 87-50.
The Lady Cubs came out and took the lead, however, Dimmitt kept themselves in the game. In the first quarter, Brownfield outscored Dimmitt 8-7 with Maya Martinez having four of those points. At the end of the half, the Lady Cubs found themselves ahead by 6 points, 17-11 and outscoring Dimmitt 9-4. Lucy Guzman and Amery Pauda both had three-point shots.

Moving into the second half, the Bobbies roared back to even the score at 17 all and and eventually took the lead off of free-throws making it 19-17 Dimmitt. The Bobbies would get three more points and play some tough defence not allowing Brownfield to score until there was 1:36 left in the third quarter. Maya Martinez busted a three and brought the score to 21-20, still in Dimmitt’s favor. The Lady Cubs were outscored 10-3 going into the fourth quarter 21-20 Dimmitt.
In the fourth, the Lady Cubs rallied back and scored two from Martinez, but the Bobbies would respond by adding two more. Pauda would go to the charity stripe and get those two allowing the Lady Cubs to lead again. Not long after, Pauda drained a three, getting the lead further 27-23. Both team’s defenses were working hard. Brownfield fouled twice, and each time the Bobbies only made one shot each. Next, Mariah Perez would add to the score two more points and Martinez as well. The Lady Cubs outscored Dimmitt 14-9 in the fourth winning 34-30.
The Lady Cubs won the free throw battle having 11 of 16, whereas Dimmitt was 9 of 23. Maya Martinez was the lead point scorer with 15 and Amery Pauda was next with 8.
The #19 Runnin’ Cubs took off and never looked back with thier win over the Bobcats. Brownfield outscore Dimmitt 17-11 in the first quarter with Jo Jo Carrillo having eight of those points. In the second quarter, the Runnin’ Cubs really took control of the game. All but two players scored in the second quarter and Brownfields defense was stellar. Of course outscored Dimmitt again, this time 32-11 with again, Carrillo having the most points with 12.

Coming into the second half, with the Runnin’ Cubs leading 54-22, Carrillo unleashed four more threes. During the the third, Brownfield sent Dimmitt to the line five times. The Runnin’ Cubs outscored the Bobcats again 21-11 with Carrillo leading the scoring with 12 points. In the fourth quarter, the Runnin’ Cubs slowed down a bit being outscored by Dimmitt 17-15.
The Runnin’ Cubs had 21 fouls to Dimmitt’s 14 and was 6 of 11 from the stripe. Dimmitt was 16 of 31 from the line. Jo Jo Carrillo was lead scorer with 35 points and had nine three-pointers.
