Well, high school volleyball is already in full swing and the Brownfield Lady Cubs have already earned their first win in their season and home opener sweeping Kingdom Prep 25-11, 25-12, & 25-14. Of course, there is much more to the season and a lot of tough battles ahead.
The Lady Cubs came back after making the playoffs, however, that was short-lived losing to Alpine in four sets in bi-district. Coach Vander Dussen and company want a playoff win if not two or three. One thing is for sure, Brownfield is in a tough district with long-time rival Denver City who always finds a way to win, and a new face from last season Odessa Compass who made it to the Region I-3A Semifinals before falling to Holliday. The Lady Cubs are arguably in the toughest region in the state with Bushland, who tends to find themselves in the state finals or simply winning it all. So basically all roads lead to Bushland in Region I.

So yes, Coach Vander Dussen knows what her team is up against. The Lady Cubs are loaded with five seniors this season, which is almost half the team. Coach Vander Dussen will be bringing back seven from last year’s team and only one coming back who received district honors. However, after this summer’s time on the court in different tourneys and camps, the Lady Cubs will be a force to be reckoned with.
Coach Vander Dussen said, “Coming in this year we have 7 returners, including 5 seniors, one junior, and one sophomore. I believe this sets us up to not only be more experienced playing a high level of volleyball but also helps set a culture with our seniors.”
Last season the Lady Cubs posted an 11-23 record which was a hard pill to swallow because the year before they went 33-5 before falling to Holiday in the Region I-3A Semifinals. Of course, five of the six starters were seniors. However, Coach Vander Dussen is optimistic for this season. “They have seen the positives and negatives of last season and have come in with a solid plan and common language for the goals they have this year. Our focus this season will be the team that outworks our opponents, no matter who we’re against we’re going to fight,” said Coach Vander Dussen.
