Horton’s High School Football Picks: Week 5

by Eric

Welcome back to Horton’s Pick ‘Ems. I went 58-22 last week. This past week, it was the 5A and 3A teams causing the issues! Most games are from the West Text area, which includes the South Plains, Panhandle, Permian Basin, Big Country, and Concho Valley. In the list below, there are 80 games in Week 5, Sept. 26-28, 2024. Games with the # next to it means they are district games. Teams with a number in the ( ) in front of them are their ranking. Games with a (T) or an (S) are Thursday and Saturday games. The school (team) on the left is Eric Horton’s pick. We encourage you all to pick which team will win.

Two 6A schools are playing out-of-state teams. Midland Legacy heads east 589 miles to take on the 3-0 Ruston Bearcats of Ruston, LA. The other team is Permian, which will host Carver High from Birmingham, AL, which is 991 miles to the east. I don’t know what to think, but both games are great. Another top game to watch will be between Sweetwater and #9 Wall. Sweetwater is 2-2 with wins over Greenwood and Estacado, but lost to Idalou and #5 Seminole (4A DII). Wall is 3-1 and has some good wins under their belt, like Jim Ned. This brings me to the next top game, with Jim Ned taking on #8 Holliday (3A DII). Jim Ned is coming off a win where they knocked off #4 Jacksboro (3A DII) last Friday… can they do it two in a row? #3 Canadian (3A DII) will travel 93 miles across the top of the Panhandle to #5 Sunray (2A DI). This might be the best game of week in West Texas. Just saying… both team has great resume of wins, although Canadian is 3-1, their lone loss come from #3 Bushland (3A DI), Sunray has impressive wins over Abernathy 39-0, and #2 Stratford (2A DII). I’ll be checking the score often. Final game that I feel will be great, however there no implications, the Shally vs Idalou game. Neither are ranked, but both teams are good… very good. There is a long history between these two schools that take us back to the mid-90’s if not further. Shally should get this one!
