Just as volleyball season ends, basketball begins for the State Champion Lady Cubs. Already, accolades are beginning for this team that hopes to repeat as State Champions again this year.
Lone Star Varsity recently released their pre-season picks and the Lady Cubs were well represented.
Gabi Fields was picked as the pre-season Player of the Year for all schools in the area. The Lone Star article stated, “Gabi has what separates good players from great players: the ability to rise up in crunch time.
“The Brownfield senior showed as much in the State Championship game, leading her team down the stretch to complete a comeback win for the Class 3A title. Down eight points with less than four minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Lady Cubs clawed back to force overtime. Fields had the first four points of the extra period and iced the game at the free throw line.”
Her coach, Michelle Wyatt stated, “She just really went, had a nose for the ball and found it, and made some clutch free throws for us. That is what you are looking for in a great player. Just knowing what to do and being willing to do it.”
Gabi was District MVP, as well as State Tournament MVP, along with many other honors along the way.
Gabi signed her letter of intent to continue her basketball career at the University of Northern Colorado.
Gabi is also a great student and serves as President of her Senior class.
Named to the Lone Star Pre-Season Super Team was Dabria Blackwell.
The article states, “Dabria was the District 3-3A defensive MVP and TABC All Region selection. She posted 8.8 points a game, 3.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.9 steals.”
Deja Johnson was named as a Spark off the Bench player on the Super Team.
“Deja averaged 9.8 points and five rebounds per game. She was named Class 3A All Tournament and TABC All State.”
Deja, and sister Tia have both made verbal commitments to Lubbock Christian University to continue their basketball career.
The Lady Cubs season begins with a game at Midland High on Tuesday, November 16.
