Filing for municipal, school board, and special district positions will open on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, for eight municipal and governmental entities across Terry County. The deadline to file for a place on the ballot for the May 2, 2026, General Election is Friday, February 13, 2026.
Candidate filings will be accepted at 507-A West Main Street in Brownfield.
City of Brownfield
The City of Brownfield will have four positions open for filing:
- Mayor
- City Council Districts 1, 2, and 3
Current officeholders include Paul Vasquez Jr. (District 1), Vanessa Valdonado (District 2), Lee Gamez (District 3), and Mayor Eric Horton. All four incumbents are eligible to seek another term.
Councilwoman Valdonado was recently appointed to District 1 following the passing of her mother, Mary Valdonado, on November 21, 2025. As of publication, none of the incumbents have publicly announced their intentions regarding the upcoming election.
City of Meadow
The City of Meadow will have three positions open:
- Mayor
- Two At-Large City Council seats
The current at-large council members are Chase Fleming and Maria Fraire, and the current mayor is Natalie Howard. All are eligible for re-election, and none have announced their plans at this time.
City of Wellman
The City of Wellman will have open council seats in Place 1, Place 2, and Place 3. The incumbents are Cody Griffiths (Place 1), Lucia Ramirez (Place 2), and Jake Rempel (Place 3). All are eligible to run again, but no announcements have been made.
Brownfield Independent School District
Brownfield ISD recently changed its election structure from five single-member districts and two at-large seats to seven at-large positions, each serving a three-year term.
- Position 1: Geoff Cooper (term ends 2026)
- Position 2: Tim Swaringen (term ends 2026)
- Position 3: Cat Gonzalez (term ends 2027)
- Position 4: Matt Valdonado (term ends 2027)
- Position 5: April Salas (term ends 2028)
- Position 6: Julian Hernandez (term ends 2028)
- Position 7: Keri Barnett (term ends 2028)
Cooper and Swaringen are eligible to file for re-election in 2026.
Meadow ISD
One At-Large trustee position will be on the ballot. The incumbent, Rusty Day, is eligible for re-election.
Wellman-Union ISD
Two At-Large trustee positions will be open. The incumbents are Barrett Brown and James Harlan, both of whom are eligible to seek another term.
Brownfield Regional Medical Center Board
Two seats on the Brownfield Regional Medical Center Board of Directors will be up for election. The current board members are Joe Silva and Jeffrey Davis Jr., both eligible for re-election.
South Plains Underground Water Conservation District
Two positions will be on the ballot for the South Plains Underground Water Conservation District. The incumbents are Tye Day and Tim Swaringen, both eligible to file for another term.
