Texas High School basketball is in full swing now and both the Brownfield Lady Cubs and Runnin’ Cubs have already played some games. The Brownfield Lady Cubs are sitting at a 1-5 record with losses to Whitharral, Levelland, Westbrook, Hale Center, and New Deal. Their lone win was against Lockney 73-20. Two of the five losses, Levelland and Westbrook, are in the Top-25 in their respective classes. The Lady Cubs beginning on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, will have three away games in a row taking on Monahans, New Home (Nov. 28), and Tahoka (Dec. 1). They’ll be back on their home court on Dec. 5 against Andrews. Then the Lady Cubs will stay home for the Brownfield tourney slated for Dec. 7-9, 2023.
On Dec. 12, they head to Dimmitt for their district opener, then come home on Dec. 15, and go up against Snyder. On Dec. 19, they’ll catch their second district game at home against Littlefield. From Dec. 28-30 they’ll play in the Caprock Tourney. When the new year rolls around on Jan. 2, they’ll continue district play at Lamesa, and come home on Jan 5 to take on Friona. They’ll then travel up to Muleshoe on Jan. 9, and be back home for back-to-back home district games on Jan 12 vs Denver City and Jan. 16 vs Dimmitt. On Jan. 23 they’ll be back on the road to Littlefield, then on Jan. 26 back home against Lamesa. Next, they’ll travel north to Friona on Jan. 30, back home on Feb. 2 against Muleshoe and their final district game will be at Denver City on Feb. 6.
The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs are 3-1 on the season. Their lone loss came on their first game of the season after their playoff game in football to Class 5A Lubbock Monterey 62-44. The Runnin’ Cubs have now won three straight games against 4A Andrews (46-34), 3A Lubbock-Cooper Liberty (66-53), and 4A Sweetwater (56-52). On Tuesday, Nov. 21, the Runnin’ Cubs travel to Snyder then travel over to Slaton on Nov. 28. Beginning on Thursday, Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 the Runnin’ Cubs will head up highway 62/82 to join the Gene Messer Classic Tournament, and Brownfield will be the smallest school in the competition. Next, the Runnin’ Cubs will stay home for their own tourney from Dec. 7-9. Next on Dec. 12, they travel over to Levelland, and then on Dec. 15, they stay home and take on Big Spring.
The Runnin’ Cubs on Dec. 19 will have their district opener at home against Littlefield. Then they get one more tourney up in Canyon Dec. 28-30. On Jan. 2 they continue with district action away vs Lamesa. They come back home on Jan 5, against Friona, then go north to Muleshoe on Jan. 9. Next they’ll have back-to-back district home games against Denver City on Jan 12 and Dimmitt on Jan 16. They’ll travel up to Littlefield on Jan 23, and back home against Lamesa on Jan 26. Next, they’ll go back north to Friona on Jan 30, and back home on Feb. 2 against Muleshoe. The Runnin’ Cubs will then have back-to-back district away games over at Denver City on Feb. 6 and up at Dimmitt on Feb. 9.
