Brownfield Cubs swat the Hornets

The Brownfield Cubs football squad is now 2-0 after their 40-14 win over the Tulia Hornets. It didn’t take too long for the Cubs to strike with a 33-yard TD pass to Jo Jo Carrillo from JJ Martinez with 8:39 left in the first quarter. The PAT was good bringing the score to 7-0. On the kickoff, the Hornets would return the ball to their 44-yard line. The Cubs would get an offsides penalty, however, Tulia would get those yards added back when they had five five-yard loss on second down. Their next play was an incomplete pass brought up 4th and 10 and punted the ball.

Carrillo would receive the punt and return it to Brownfields 35. Gage McPherson rushed for eight yards on 1st down, setting up 2nd & 2 and then a quick JJ pass to Q Busby getting the 1st down. The Hornets decided they would take a time-out. Coming out of the TO, Austin Martinez would get 3-yards on a pass from JJ. On 2nd down, JJ hit George Rivera for six yards. On 3rd & 1 there was no gain. Coach Brantley decided to go for it on 4th due to field position and it worked out really well as JJ hit Brason Salas with a 1st down pass. Salas would end up getting facemasked and Tulia was penalized 15 yards at the end of the play. This set up the Cubs on the Hornets 22. On 1st down the ball fell incomplete, and the same on 2nd down. On 3rd, JJ would scramble but would lose 5 yards. On 4th and 15 it was another incomplete pass and the Cubs turned the ball over on downs.

Tulia would start on their 27-yard line gaining one yard in 1st down. On 2nd down the Hornets for a 4-yard gain, but then nothing on 3rd down causing them to punt the ball. Carrillo would receive the punt and return it back a little better than when they turned it over on downs getting to the Hornets’ 25. 1st down was an incomplete pass, then on 2nd, it was a hand-off to Carrillo who would get seven yards on the play. Next McPherson would gain 2 yards setting up a 4th and short. JJ handed the ball off to McPherson getting the 1st down. On 1st down, JJ with the keeper gained 4 yards. On 2nd & 6, JJ would find Carrillo with a 12-yard TD pass and the PAT was good making the score 14-0 with .59 seconds left in the 1st quarter.

The Cubs would have a short kick to the 43. The Hornets decided to keep the ball on the ground and got it to the Brownfield 36 setting up a 1st down. On the next 1st down the Hornets would lose a yard and the 1st Quarter would end. Beginning the 2nd quarter, Tulia would be 2nd & 10. On the 2nd down, the ball would be intercepted at the 1-yard line by Rivera giving the ball back to Brownfield. The 1st & 2nd downs were incomplete, however, McPherson would be handed the ball and get a 10-yard gain for the 1st down. The Cubs would get another 1st & 10 at their 25. On 1st down JJ aired the ball to Rivera for a 75-yard TD pass bringing the score to 20-0 and the PAT was no good in the 2nd quarter at the 9:45 mark.

Cubs would kick off again penning the Hornets on their 25, however, they would go three-and-out and punt the ball again to the midfield. The next 1st down McPherson kept the ball on the ground and made a 14-yard first down run. The next three downs JJ’s passes were incomplete then on 4th & 10, JJ connected with Carrillo for an 11-yard first down pass. JJ then fumbles the ball out of bounds and loses three yards. Rivera came in for JJ and lost 10 yards. on 3rd and 22 another incomplete pass. On 4th, the Cubs did not get enough yards for the 1st down.

Tulia would then take over on their 20 and again go three-and-out punting the ball to Brownfield’s 46. 1st & 10 JJ’s ball was incomplete. On 2nd they kept it on the ground with McPherson gaining 6 yards. On 3rd & 4 JJ passed to Austin for a 7-yard 1st down on the Hornets 43. Next, play another 9-yard pass to Carrillo. On 2nd & 1, a JJ pass to Austin for the 1st down. Next on 1st & 10, JJ connected again with Carrillo, this with a 19-yard TD pass. The Cubs got the PAT bringing the score 27-0 with 6:53 left in the first half.

The kickoff was returned to Tulia’s 30-yard line. The Hornets would have an incomplete pass, then 2nd & 10 they lost 4 yards. However, with 3rd & 14, Tulia got a nice pass to the midfield gaining another 1st down. On 1st & 10, Tulia coughed up the ball with Brownfield recovering the fumble on the Cubs 44. Although the Cubs recovered the ball and marched downfield to score again, they did not have enough time left. So the score at halftime was 27-0

In the 3rd, Tulia would get the ball first on their 33. The Hornets were able to gain 7 yards on 1st & 2nd downs, and an incomplete on 3rd & 4th giving the Cubs the ball at Tulia’s 40. McPherson would gain 4 yards on 1st down, then on 2nd down JJ would run the ball, however some laundry went flying on the field and the Cubs lost 15 yards off a penalty. Now its 2nd & 25 and no gain bringing up 3rd down and the ball was intercepted.

Tulia took over on their 48. Next a 1st down pass play to Brownfield’s 41. Next, they had a 2-yard gain and on 2nd & 8 broke out to give the Hornets another 1st down. On the next 1st down, Tulia gained 20 yards for a 1st & 10. Then Kaden Wise had a QB sack with a 7-yard loss. On 2nd & 17, the Hornets got down to the one-yard line setting up a 1st & goal. The Hornets tried to punch it in on 1st & goal, however, there was no gain. On 2nd down the Hornets got a false start backing them up on the 6-yard line. However, Tulia found some magic and scored bringing the score with the PAT 27-7.

The Cubs then returned the kickoff to their 44. On 1st & 10 Izaiah Morin would get the ball and run 14 yards for the 1st. Again on the next 1st & 10, Morin one more time would get the 1st down, this time running 16 yards. Next JJ would run 6 yards bringing up 2nd & 4. 2nd & 3rd downs the ball was incomplete. On 4th & 4, McPherson ran the ball getting the first down and Tulia received a penalty that took the Cubs half the distance to the goal. On 1st & Goal on the 4, McPherson gained 2 yards. Then on 2nd down, a false start by the Cubs, and now its 2nd & goal on the 7. Rivera would get a 3-yard gain. On 3rd down another 3-yard gain making it 4th & goal on the 1. However, the Cubs could not capitalize and got pushed back to the 5-yard line and turned the ball over on downs with 17 seconds left in the 3rd.

The Hornets would take over on 1st down and lose 2 yards. Beginning in the 4th quarter, the Hornets would end up going three and out punting from their 1-yard line. Carrillo would return the punt to the Hornets’ 7. On 1st & 10, JJ would connect t again with Carrillo on a 7-yard TD pass and the PAT was good bringing the score 34-7 with 10:39 left in the 4th. Tulia would take over after the kickoff on their 28. They were able to get a 1st down off of a pass to their 39. On the next series of downs, the quarterback was sacked again by Wise for a loss of 3 yards. The Hornets could only get to midfield and turned the ball over on downs. 1st & 10 for the Cubs and JJ on the QB keeper had an 8-yard gain. On nd & 2, JJ again kept the ball getting the 1st down at Tulia 34. Next on 1st & 10, McPherson had a 9-yard gain. Then on 2nd & 1, Rivera got a 1st down pass to the 14. Next JJ would get intercepted, however, a flag was thrown for roughing the passer, and the Cubs retained the ball. This set up a 1st & goal and McPherson ran in the TD from the handoff bringing the score to 40-7, with 6:02 in the 4th and the PAT was no good. Tulia would get the kickoff on their 40 and march down the field to score a TD with .58 seconds left, bringing the final score to 40-14.
