The Brownfield ISD School Board held its last school board meeting of 2022 Monday night Dec. 19, 2022. The meeting began with the recognition of the Student of the Month which is Ayla Salazar from Colonial Heights! Next, the Board recognized the Employees of the Month which are Arianna Allison -CH, Tosha Bell – OG, Christian Pilgrim – BMS, and Virginia Herrera – BHS. Also, the Board recognized the Child Nutrition Staff and some of the Ag Leadership Students from Brownfield FFA.
The Board moved on to the Superintendent’s report. BISD Superintendent Chris Smith told the Board that the schools are being “winterized”. Smith also spoke about how BISD was able to partner with the Brownfield Police Dept. so Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) could use the old middle school. (see connected story) Smith then spoke about the athletic program, (AD Coach Aarrhon Flores was not present). Smith said that there was an important district game coming up for the Cubs against Dimmitt and the Lady Cubs are 1-0 and will also be taking on Dimmitt.
Smith then spoke about the enrollment. According to Smith, BISD as a whole is down four students from this time last year (2021-2022 school year). The high school enrollment is down by 10 students from last year, Brownfield Education Center (BEC) is up by seven students, middle school is down by 16 compared to last year, Oak Grove Elementary 2nd grade through 5th Grades is up 16, Oak Grove Elementary K through 1st grade is down 11 students and Colonial Heights is up by 10 from last year.
BISD recently put out a “request for quote ” (RFQ) for an architecture firm to look at building a new administration building. Sara Bradshaw and Lori Martin of SK Architecture Group semi-presented wanting to do the architecture work on the future admin building. According to Smith, SK received many recommendations from businesses like Lee Lewis and Parkhill. The Board approved for SK to do the architecture work for the new admin building.
The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting is slated for Thursday, January 12, 2023, at 7:30 am in the BISD Board Room at the BISD Admin Building.
