BHS Varsity Basketball take Friona to task, both still undefeated in district

The Brownfield Lady Cubs and Runnin’ Cubs basketball teams traveled to Friona Tuesday afternoon Jan. 3, 2023, to take on the Sqaws and Chieftains in a set of District 3-3A games. Both teams came out on top as the Lady Cubs improved their district record to 3-0 winning 51-19 and the Runnin’ Cubs improved their district record to 2-0 winning in high fashion 98-32.

The Lady Cubs began the game outscoring Friona 9-7 in the first quarter. In the next quarter, Brownfield took charge on both offense and defense. The Lady Cubs took a nice lead going into halftime and outscored Friona 12-3 in the 2nd giving them an 11-point lead at halftime 21-10. After halftime, the Lady Cubs really came alive with Junior #23 Amery Pauda busting three 3’s and getting a nice long two-pointer. Brownfield would end up outscoring Friona in the 3rd 17-7 bringing the score to 38-17 going into the 4th. During the 4th, the Lady Cubs did not let up as they finished outscoring Friona 13-2 and winning 51-19.

Sophomore #3 Lucy Guzman and Junior #23 Amery Pauda tied as high-point scorers with 11 points each. Senior #35 Kamryn Watkins had 10 points.

The Runnin’ Cubs showed up to play as well and throughout the majority of the game, Brownfield rained down 21 3-pointers. The Runnin’ Cubs began the first quarter with a high-octane offense and stifling defense outscoring Friona 25-6. Brownfield would not let up in the 2nd draining seven 3-pointers and outscoring the Chieftains 33-8 leading 58-14 at the half. After a great 1st half, the Runnin’ Cubs’ defense backed off a bit, however, continued their 3-point barrage dropping six 3-pointers and outscoring Friona 22-14 going into the 4th leading 80-28. Brownfield finished up the game by outscoring Frioina 18-4 in the 4th winning 98-38.

Freshman #13 Pedro Rodriguez was lead point scorer with 15 points, following him was Junior #11 KJ Carroll with 14 points. Freshman Jeron Lawrence had 12 points, and Seniors #4 Logan Shrimpton and #23 Malik Mason had 10 points each.
