The Brownfield High School, “The Spirit of the Plains Band,” has had a successful season. Recently, different sections of the band have been recognized for their outstanding performances.

Congratulations to these members of The Spirit of the Plains who earned seats in the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) Region Jazz Bands. The ATSSB is dedicated to promoting, encouraging participation in, and maintaining small school bands in the state of Texas. The organization fosters a cooperative relationship with other agencies and organizations that aim to develop music education in Texas public schools. Eian Mulkey earned 1st chair Tenor Sax, Jazz III and Laibyn Alvarado earned 2nd chair Trombone, Jazz II

Mr. Burks proudly expressed his admiration for all the students who auditioned, saying, “Every student was in the hunt and most of them are underclassmen,  so they’ll have another opportunity in the fall of 2025 to audition and nobody gets worse by taking part in the audition process. They only get better.” The Region Jazz Bands will perform at South Plains College on January 24th after a two-day workshop with renowned clinicians.

Congratulations to The Spirit of the Plains Color Guard! The auxiliary unit of a high school marching band in Texas consists of the color guard, drum line, and twirlers. The color guard is a group of students who enhance the band’s performances with flags and other props, adding style and color. On Sunday, Sept. 22, The Spirit of the Plains Color Guard earned 3rd Place at the West Texas Auxiliary Championship! The color guard is coached by former Texas Tech Going Band from Raiderland Color Guard member and current Brownfield High School Theatre teacher, Kaci Keltz.
