On Sunday, December 3, 2023, three members of the Brownfield Spirit of the Plains, one BHS alumnus, along with Assistant Director Emily Hercules participated in the 50th annual Tuba Christmas at The Buddy Holly Performance Hall for Arts and Sciences in Lubbock. The Lubbock event which is one of over 300 Tuba Christmas events held worldwide each December was sponsored by the Tuba/Euphonium studio and their professor, Dr. Kevin Wass.

The group rehearsed in Crickets Theatre in the early afternoon and then returned to the stage at 4:30 p.m. for a concert featuring well-known Christmas Carols. The concert included a special performance by the students in the Tech studio of “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch”. The Tech performance included solos by the members of the studio who will graduate from Texas Tech this year.
BHS students and alumni who participated in this prestigious event were Braden Conn, Samuel Lopez, Eian Mulkey, and Ryan Gamez. Director of Bands, Will Burks, said that he likes this event for a number of reasons, specifically that it affords BHS tuba and euphonium players the opportunity to take the spotlight for a day and to socialize with other tuba/euphonium players from the South Plains. Having the opportunity to play in Crickets Theatre is a bonus for BHS students.” Mr. Burks hopes that the BHS group for next year’s Tuba Christmas will include the entire tuba/euphonium section.
