April is upon us! Spring has brought us new blooms, more Sun, and a fun day of practical jokes! There are many exciting things to come for April, let’s look at them…
April 2024
April is observed as the National Child Abuse Prevention Month, (CAPM). The month of April is dedicated to raising awareness of child abuse and understanding warning signs of possible abuse. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is providing a toolkit that includes daily messages to use in promoting awareness of child abuse, resources, and sample imagery to share. Friday, April 5th is DFPS Go Blue Day, where wearing the color blue on this day shows recognition and dedication to children who are affected by child abuse.
April 1, 2024: April Fools Day
Funny enough, the exact origin of April Fool’s Day remains a mystery, though the fan-favorite unofficial holiday lives on, as it is a great opportunity for the media and news broadcasters to have a bit of fun and create outlandish stories to get their audiences stirred, then to come back and say, “April Fool’s!”. It is speculated that April Fool’s started in 18th century Britain and Scotland. The tradition in Scotland started as a hunting of the “gowk” on April 1st, which is a fictional bird. The joke was that people were sent on errands they were not going to complete because the tasks asked of the individual were made up! This then transpired into the practical jokes of putting “Kick Me” signs on the backs of innocent bystanders. April Fool’s has definitely gotten more elaborate since its beginning!
April 8, 2024: Solar Eclipse
On April 8th there will be a total solar eclipse visible across the majority of the United States! The totality will only last for just four minutes. It is expected to start crossing over Dallas at 12:23 p.m. and will be totally dark from 1:40 p.m. to 1:42 p.m.. In Terry County, we will not see the total eclipse, as it does not pass directly over Brownfield. But we will see a good portion of the Sun covered! Be sure to wear protective sunglasses, as the Sun is still damaging to the eyes, even when partially covered by the moon.
April 11, 2024: Women in Ag Conference
Here in Terry County, the 6th Annual Women in Ag Conference & Luncheon will be held at the Fulford Barn! Beginning at 10:00 a.m., there will be great entertainment and speakers. The event is free to attend, but spots are limited so it is necessary to RSVP as soon as possible! This event is a great opportunity for women to come together and cultivate meaningful knowledge of lives that you may already be a part of!
April 15, 2024: Tax Day
Of course, this one is important as it is the final day to submit income tax return information in the United States. If your calendar isn’t already marked, be sure to mark it.
April 28, 2024: National Pay it Forward Day
This is a great day to do one small act of kindness, and reflect on small acts of kindness another has done for you. Whether it be a compliment, sweet treat, or flowers, let someone know you care about them!
