An Open Letter From Brownfield Mayor Eric Horton

Mayor Eric Horton: It Starts With Me – A Call to Keep Brownfield Beautiful

There is an old saying that if you want to see change, you must first be willing to become part of that change. That is exactly what the City of Brownfield is asking of our community today.

We are launching Keep Brownfield Beautiful, a community-wide initiative designed to reduce litter, improve our neighborhoods, and encourage every citizen to take pride in the place we call home.

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day and welcome hundreds of visitors to our community for our annual fireworks celebration at Coleman Park, every department within the City of Brownfield is stepping up. Our crews will be cleaning streets, parks, public spaces, and neighborhoods to help showcase Brownfield at its very best.

But let me be very clear:

The City cannot do this alone.

Keeping Brownfield clean is not solely the responsibility of city employees. It belongs to every one of us.

Every homeowner.
Every business owner.
Every church.
Every neighborhood.
Every citizen.

The appearance of our community reflects the pride we have in it.

Too often we expect someone else to pick up the litter, mow the weeds, clean the sidewalk, or haul away debris. The truth is that lasting change doesn’t begin at City Hall—it begins in our own front yards, our own businesses, and with our own personal choices.

That is why, from June 29 through July 11, 2026, the City is making it easier than ever for residents to participate.

City of Brownfield residential household sanitation customers may dispose of acceptable residential cleanup debris at the City Sanitary Landfill without tipping fees.

A City dump trailer will also be available at our new Recycling Center located at 1300 East Hill Street (E. Hill & S. Cedar), where residents can dispose of residential cleanup debris. Recycling containers are also available to help keep reusable materials out of our landfill.

This program is intended for City of Brownfield residential household sanitation customers only. Commercial businesses, contractors, tree service companies, rental property cleanouts, and other commercial operations are not eligible for this free program and will continue to follow normal landfill regulations and applicable fees.

This initiative isn’t about pointing fingers or assigning blame.

It’s about taking ownership.

If each of us simply cleaned around our own property, picked up litter when we saw it, and encouraged our families and neighbors to do the same, the difference across Brownfield would be remarkable.

As we celebrate Independence Day at Coleman Park, I ask everyone to help by using the provided trash receptacles, recycling whenever possible, and leaving the park cleaner than you found it.

If you’re celebrating with fireworks at home, please take a few extra minutes afterward to pick up the spent fireworks, boxes, and other debris. Those few minutes make a tremendous difference in keeping our neighborhoods clean and safe.

I also want to personally thank our dedicated City employees. Over the next several days, they will be working long hours to prepare our streets, parks, and public areas for this celebration. They care deeply about Brownfield, and I appreciate their commitment to serving our community.

I also want to thank every volunteer, civic organization, church, business, and resident who chooses to be part of this effort.

This campaign is only the beginning. Throughout the coming months, we will continue expanding Keep Brownfield Beautiful through additional cleanup events, volunteer opportunities, and community partnerships.

Brownfield has so much to be proud of. We are a community of hardworking people who care about our neighbors and our future. Let’s make sure our community reflects those values.

Remember…

Brownfield doesn’t become beautiful by chance.

It starts with me.

It starts with you.

It starts with all of us.

Together, let’s keep Brownfield beautiful.

Eric Horton
Mayor, City of Brownfield
