All three Terry County girls basketball squads face an uphill battle in the first round of playoffs

by Eric

Playoffs for Texas girls high school basketball begin today, Monday, Feb. 12, 2024. All three Terry County girls’ Basketball teams have earned a spot in the playoffs. The Brownfield Lady Cubs are the 4th seed out of District 3-3A, Meadow Lady Broncos are the 3rd seed out of District 7-1A, and the Wellman-Union Lady Cats are the 4th seed out of District 8-1A.

The Lady Cubs take on the district champion Crane Lady Birds tomorrow night, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024, in Andrews with a 7:00 p.m. tipoff. The Lady Cubs played 20 non-district games, and of those 20 teams, 16 of them are in the playoff from 1A to 4A. Crane played 19 non-district games, and of those teams made it to the playoffs. Although, Brownfield’s record is 15-19, don’t let that fool you. These young ladies have worked hard to get to this point, and now the postseason is a new season.

Both Brownfield and Crane have one team in common this season. Both teams played Monahans and both teams won, Brownfield 46-33 and Crane 42-28. The last time the Lady Cubs and Lady Birds faced off was last year in the same game, the bi-district round with Brownfield losing 57-49. So both teams know a little about each other. The Lady Cubs main focus will be to control the ball and get the rebounds as often as they can.

Both Meadow & Wellman-Union are in the playoffs again. There is a saying in Texas Class 1A girls basketball, and that is, “All roads lead to Naz!” Nazareth has been to the state tourney 32 times and has won 25 state titles, so thats why that is said. However, to get to Naz, you must win until you get to them.

Meadow takes on Sands tomorrow evening Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024, with a 6:00 p.m. tipoff at Denver City. These two squads met up early in January at Sands, with Meadow losing 53-20. This game was at Sands and after a long break from playing ball. This will be different tomorrow night as the Lady Broncos will fight till the bitter end. The key is to slow down the ball and play their game, not Sands. If Meadow wins, this will be considered an upset.

Wellman-Union Lady Cats punched their ticket to the playoff for the third straight year. They take on #6 Whiteface tonight Monday, Feb. 12, 2024 at Trinity Christian in Lubbock. The Cats are probably the youngest team from their district, and they are certainly the youngest out of them and Whiteface. The last time these two teams tangled was last year in this game, the bi-district round, where the Lady Cats lost 66-36. If there was ever a time for a huge upset, tonight this would be the time. Look for the Lady Cats to slow down the ball and perhaps try to play keep away from Whiteface. This will help the Lady Lopes from running up the score.
