Horton’s High School Football Picks, Week 5

by Eric

Well, Week 6 is here, and we’re starting to find out just how good some of these teams really are — while also seeing a few surprises along the way.

Last week, I went 67-for-93, which comes out to 72%. Some districts began play last week, but this week there are only 84 games on the board because many teams are on their bye week. District action will really pick up next Friday.

There aren’t many games this week with that big “prestige factor,” but I’m gonna give it a shot anyway.

Wellman-Union vs. Springlake-Earth — at Wellman

There really isn’t a rivalry here, but these two teams come into the game with identical 2-3 records, and they do have one common opponent — Petersburg.

Springlake-Earth defeated Petersburg 31-25, while Wellman-Union lost to the Buffaloes 44-36.

This should be another good test for the Wildcats, especially considering they have played some of their best football against Division I opponents. Wellman-Union has shown they can battle, and playing at home should help.

I’ll keep this one in Terry County.

Shally at Plainview

The Mustangs are coming off a tough 46-35 loss to Idalou, and they’ll be looking to get back on track this week.

Plainview has a much larger enrollment than Shallowater — by more than 700 students — so based strictly on numbers, you would think the Bulldogs should have the advantage.

But football isn’t played on enrollment sheets.

Shally has plenty of talent, and I have a feeling the Mustangs will come into this one with something to prove. After last week’s loss, I think they’ll take some frustration out on the Bulldogs.

Littlefield at Dimmitt

The Dimmitt Bobcats have surprised quite a few folks across the South Plains and Panhandle this season.

Dimmitt is off to a 5-0 start, and the last time the Bobcats started a season 5-0 was back in 1988, when they actually went 6-0 before losing their seventh game to Floydada.

This Bobcat team can score a lot of points.

Then you have Littlefield, and the Wildcats seem to be always good. Littlefield comes into this one at 4-1, while Dimmitt remains unbeaten at 5-0.

Littlefield has to travel a little farther north this week, and Dimmitt is riding a pretty good hot streak right now, but I can’t picture a Wildcat loss to Dimmitt
