Cubs Fall to Coahoma, Turn Attention to Roosevelt
The Brownfield Cubs suffered their first loss of the season Friday night as Coahoma earned a 37-0 victory. The Cubs struggled to find an offensive rhythm, finishing with 74 total yards.
Braydon Luther led Brownfield’s ground attack with 65 yards on 12 carries, while Zac Soto added six yards and Ben Estrada finished with two. Estrada completed one of 13 passes for one yard.
Defensively, Luther led the Cubs with 10.5 tackles. Brody Durham recorded 6.5 tackles, Adrian Garza added six, and Soto and Luis Morales each finished with five.
Despite the setback, Brownfield improved significantly in one important area. After being penalized 26 times in its season opener, the Cubs committed only six penalties against Coahoma.
“We have to be the aggressors for the entirety of the game on both sides of the football,” Head Coach Lawrence Johnson said. “There are still too many assignment mistakes that need to be fixed. Our discipline improved as we went from 26 penalties to six.”
Brownfield will look to bounce back Friday night when the Cubs travel to face the Roosevelt Eagles. Johnson said the team is looking forward to the “new-look adversity” awaiting them this week.

Broncos Use Strong Ground Game to Earn Another Victory
The Meadow Broncos turned in another strong performance, using solid blocking and an explosive rushing attack to secure the win.
Brayson Parker led the offense with an outstanding 299 yards and five touchdowns on 20 carries. Quarterback Pancho Arita completed four of five passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns while also recording 10 tackles defensively.
Esteban Estrada caught two passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. EJ Piedra added two receptions for 35 yards and a score, rushed twice for 29 yards, recorded 10 tackles and intercepted a pass. Marty Garcia led Meadow’s defense with 11 tackles.
“I thought we played pretty well overall,” Head Coach Blake Jackson said. “We did a good job blocking up front and containing their quick backs. We found some things to work on that we will get fixed, but I was pleased with the effort given by our guys and always happy to come away with a win.”
The victory keeps the Broncos’ strong start to the season rolling as they continue preparing for the challenges ahead.
Wildcats Fall Just Short in Shootout Against Silverton
The Wellman-Union Wildcats battled until the final whistle but came up just short in a 62-58 loss to Silverton, moving their season record to 1-1.
Silverton grabbed a 22-14 lead in the opening quarter, but the Wildcats responded by scoring the only six points of the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 22-20 at halftime.
Both offenses came alive after the break. Silverton outscored Wellman-Union 20-12 in the third quarter to take a 42-32 advantage into the final period. The Wildcats mounted a furious fourth-quarter rally, scoring 26 points, but Silverton added 20 and held on for the four-point victory.
Wellman-Union will look to bounce back Friday, September 11, when the Wildcats travel to Petersburg for another nondistrict matchup. The Buffaloes enter the game with an 0-2 record following a 56-32 loss to Meadow.
