Brownfield Lady Cubs & Runnin’ Cubs

The Brownfield Lady Cubs seem to be on a roll after last week’s wins, one on the road over Dimmitt 43-40, and now 1-0 in district action, and the other win at home over 4A Snyder 38-31. However, next up tomorrow Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, Brownfield will take on the 10-5 Littlefield Lady Cats at home in a district game. Like Brownfield, Littlefield is 1-0 in district play beating Denver City last Tuesday 47-41. The Lady Cubs will be at home and the pit could be the help they need to improve to 7-11 and most importantly 2-0 in district. Also cleaning up the turnovers will help as well. This would be good before the Lady Cubs enter into the required holiday break and then wrap up 2023 in the Caprock Classic where they will take on the #1 TAPPS 3A team Lubbock Christian.

Although the Runnin’ Cubs have been doing very well, TABC has yet to allow them to break the top-25. Perhaps maybe that’s a blessing in disguise. Brownfield is coming off two great wins last week. The first one was against 4A Levelland winning 80-50 and where Senior Point Guard Jo Jo Carrillo had 31 points in the game. That’s about 40% of the points scored. They came home to take on 4A Big Spring winning 55-35. Next up for the Runnin’ Cubs is the 12-2 #24 Littlefield Wildcats. This will be both team’s district opener and it will be at the Pit. Littlefield’s two notable wins are against #7 2A Floydada twice winning 73-48 and 68-58. Brownfield and Littlefield have one team in common they have each played and that is Slaton where the Runnin’ Cubs won 67-51 and the Wildcats won 78-62. Notice, a 16-point difference in both games. This will be no easy game for the Runnin’ Cubs. They will need all the speed they can get to defend and get down the court. Like the Lady Cubs, this will be the final game before the holiday break. After the holiday break, Brownfield will finish out 2023 at the Tatum Tough Tournament at Canyon ISD. Their first two games will be against #17 4A Canyon and then Clarendon.

Meadow Lady Broncos & Broncos

It did not go well for the Lady Broncos last week when they fell in two district games. Of course, when your team is in one of the toughest 1A girls’ districts in the state, it’s gonna be hard. Meadow lost their district o-enter to #10 Whiteface 60-30 and then #14 Whitharral 83-32. According to Coach Vedder, during the Whitharral game, some of the girls were sick. Whitharral is 14-1 on the season, and their only loss was in a tournament against the #1 1A New Mexico team Roy/Mosquero. The Lady Broncos will stay home tomorrow Tuesday, Dec 19 for their third district matchup against Amherst. The Lady Bulldogs are 1-9 with their one win over Dawson 26-24. Meadow should have a district win after the buzzer goes off tomorrow night. That will finish up 2023 for them as they will not take to the hardwood until Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, against Sands.

The Broncos took one to the chin last week losing to Lubbock Kingdom Prep 67-32. Again, Meadow is very young. They’ll begin district action tomorrow night Tuesday, Dec. 19 against Amherst. Both teams have losing records, the Broncos sit at 5-8 and the Bulldogs sit at 3-8. One thing the Broncos have going for them is unlike the girl’s side of the district, the boy’s side is not as tough, although with Morton and Whiteface having about 40 more students to choose from, they look to dominate district. However, the Broncos are eager for a win before they go on break until Jan. 2, 2024. They should be 1-0 in district play.

Wellman-Union Lady Cats & Wildcats

The Lady Cats also did not have the week they expected last week falling to Southcrest Christian and Rotan 54-26. However, there is still a lot of basketball to play before district begins on Jan. 12, 2024. The Lady Cats take on Christ the King tomorrow night Tuesday, Dec. 19 in Lubbock. Wellman-Union has already played CTK earlier in the season losing 50-46. Both team’s matchups are good, so the Lady Cats might get themselves a win before the holiday break. They will finish 2023 on Dec. 28-29 at Seagraves and O’Donnell.

The Wildcats notched another win. They lost to Southcrest Christian 79-26, however turned around and won over Rotan 60-35. Like the LadyCats, the Wildcats have plenty of ball to play before district. This will help the young grow. They take on Christ the King tomorrow Dec. 19. The first time they played this season CTK won 65-30. The Wildcats will then go into holiday break and then close out 2023 playing Seagraves and O’Donnell.
