It’s week 5 in Texas high school football and the 3-1 Littlefield Wildcats head south 56 miles to take on the 3-1 Brownfield Cubs at Cub Stadium Friday night September 22, 2023. Last season both teams came into week five undefeated at 4-0 and Brownfield won 28-14 on the road. Friday evening will begin a three-home game stretch for the Cubs, and hoping to improve to 4-1 before taking on the Muleshoe Mules next Friday.
Both teams have a common competitor they have played this season. The Post Antelopes has lost to both Brownfield, in week one, 28-24, and Littlefield in week three, 38-14. Obviously a big difference in scores, however, Brownfield’s win was on week one, and with a new head football coach… most pundits believe just ignore the first week because it’s a “learning curve” game. Well, we all know that’s not true. Both teams are coming off big wins. Brownfield traveled up to Dimmitt and won 47-29. Cub’s Coach Brantley let the second team get some reps vs Dimmitt in the second half. Littlefield’s win was over district foe Lamesa 47-18.

Comparing offenses, the Cubs have an edge with averaging 367 yards a game, Littlefield with 329 yards a game. In scoring, the Cubs average 36 points a game, and the Wildcats are averaging 34 points a game. Points allowed are only separated by one point on average with Brownfield allowing 28 points a game and Littlefield allowing 27 points a game. Both teams look very similar when it comes to yards and points, however, Brownfield has JJ Martinez as QB, and he is one of the top QBs on the South Plains, and has one of the top receivers as well with Jo Jo Carrillo.
Coach Brantley again was very candid about Littlefield saying, “We a tough matchup this week against a very good and disciplined football team in Littlefield. The Wildcats QB is a returning starter and he makes a lot of plays for them. We have our work cut out for us on defense, we must fly to the ball to contain him. Must play with passion and intensity this week. Offensively we expect them to be up at the line of scrimmage in our receiver’s faces the whole game. We have to be able to win the one-on-ones consistently through the night.”
