Cubs want back in the win column

by Eric

The Brownfield Cubs football squad is looking to get back on the winning track this Friday night after their 46-30 loss to Roosevelt last week. Coach Brantley said, “We took a tough loss last week which put us into a better focus. We are looking to get back on track this week and we understand that we have to do the vital things right and get better this week. It’s gonna be a travel so the focus and intensity have to rise. Defensively we have been vulnerable, so it is imperative that we approach this game with a tough mindset.” Brownfield will take on the Dimmitt Bobcats at Dimmitt tomorrow night Friday, Sept. 15, 2023. Last season the Cubs won 61-10 against the Bobcats.

The Bobcats come in with a 1-2 record winning their first game over Memphis 36-14, in the last two games they were shut out. Olton beat them 43-0 and the #7 Class 2A DII team of Sunray won 80-0. Dimmitt is averaging 149 offensive yards. Last week the Bobcats mustered 87 yards total, 61 in the air and 26 on the ground, although that was better than the week before against Olton with 36 in the air and negative -26 on the ground giving them a total of 10 yards on offense.

Although the Cubs lost a game, their stats are still good. Brownfield is averaging 376 offensive yards a game. Most of those are coming from the air averaging around 308 passing yards a game. QB JJ Martinez has thrown for 11 touchdowns thus far, with Jo Jo Carrillo being his number-one target and averaging 129 yards receiving a game. The Cubs obviously like to pass the ball more than run, and Dimmitt is allowing an average of 177 yards passing and 91 on the ground. Coach Brantley could potentially balance out his offense this week to see how well the run can be.

Brownfield’s defense, although got a bit tired last game, still showed up to the line of scrimmage. They did force a couple of turnovers and stopped the running game a few times against Roosevelt. Against Dimmitt, they should be able to stop the run, especially with Kaden Wise having 23.7 tackles a game.
