On Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023 approximately 4:45 pm first responders were called out to a rollover about 6 miles north of Ropesville inside Hockley County. According to Texas DPS, this was a one-vehicle rollover. Santiago Miranda, 69, of Brownfield was driving a 2014 Isuzu Ascender and was traveling southwest on US 62/82 in the inside westbound lane. Miranda swerved right for an unknown reason and traveled across the outside westbound lane into the west ditch. The Ascender rotated clockwise, entered a left-side skid, and rolled over an unknown number of times. The vehicle came to rest upside down, facing northeast on the east side of the railroad tracks.

In the Ascender were two passengers, one was Daniel Alvarado, 66, of Brownfield who was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. The other passenger was a one-year-old male from Lubbock, Texas. Miranda and the one-year-old were transported to UMC in Lubbock with serious injuries. Alvarado was pronounced dead at the scene by Hockley County Justice of the Peace Wendi McNabb.
