Late Wednesday afternoon August 10, 2022 TownTalk learned the Terry County Precinct 2 Commissioners race will be opposed by a write-in candidate. Mr. Edgar Rivera of Brownfield filed with the Terry County Joint Elections Office as a write-in on the mid-term general ballot. Rivera has a choice of earning signatures to be placed on the ballot in November, however, he opted to just pay the filing fee as a write-in of $750.00.
Krystal Valentin with the Terry County Joint Elections Office stated, “Write-ins for the General Election have to be turned in by Aug. 22 at 5:00 PM.” Of course with this being a write-in situation, Valentin said, “With the new equipment this may be confusing therefore the Terry County Elections Office will have a demonstration once the ballot is ready for testing.”
TownTalk spoke with Rivera about his decision. “I was asked to run by some of the voters in precinct 2. They feel there needs to be some change and I hope I can be that change for them,” said Rivera. He is no stranger to county precinct work as he has spent over ten years working in Precinct 4 where Ernestp Elizardo is the current Commissioner. Rivera will take on the Republican NomineeRichard Cavazos of Meadow who won the Precinct 2 primary edging out long-time commissioner Kirby Keesee by one vote.
