Cubs drop one, but find the Win column

The Brownfield Cubs have played a tough stretch of games so far this season. Facing plenty of 5 and 6A competition. They had yet to find the win column, even though they have played some games very close. That ended on Thursday, when they were able to defeat Panhandle. The Cubs started the day on Friday, December 10 with a 1-7 record.

They played an extremely tough Gene Messer Tournament last weekend, December 3-5, dropping all three tournament games.

On Tuesday night, they welcomed Childress to The Pit. Childress was a beatable team, and the Cubs nearly pulled it off before losing 69-63.

On the night, Senior Kyle Suarez led all Cub scorers with 13. Joey Martinez had 9, all coming beyond the arc. Childress went to the line 29 times in the contest, to Brownfield’s 11 times.

Head Coach Zayne McPherson said, “We competed well tonight, especially in the second half. ” The Cubs outscored Childress in the second half.

On Thursday, in the Tulia Tournament, the Cubs luck would change as they would get the 59-56 win over Panhandle.

The Cubs had a 32-24 lead at the half. They followed this with a cold third quarter, scoring only 8 points to Panhandle’s 17.

The Cubs outscored Panhandle 19-15 in the fourth to secure the victory.

McPherson stated, “It wasn’t pretty, but we will take it. It is a win. “

Sophomore Jeremiah Tealer led the scoring with 17. Followed by Kyle with 12. JoJo Carillo and Devin Hines both pitched in 8. The Cubs had 13 three-pointers in the contest.

The Cubs were to face Olton and Claude both on Friday in the tournament. They will be at home on December 17, facing Big Spring in a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
