Terry County basketball teams were hard at it all weekend long, last weekend.
The Cubs were in the Gene Messer Shootout at Frenship. The Lady Cubs were in the Canyon Tournament. The Broncos and Lady Broncos were both in the Meadow Tournament, and Wellman-Union played Southland on Friday night.
The Cubs faced nearly all 6A schools, and fell to all of them, but according to Head Coach Zayne McPherson, playing these bigger schools teaches our guys much. “If we just go in and play hard and run the plays the way they are designed, I am satisfied in a tournament like this. You go into this type of tournament for a reason.”
We don’t have the books for all the games, but in the first game against Midland High, coached by former Runnin Cub Coach Dustin Faught, JC Carillo had 16 points to lead the Cubs, and Devin Hines followed up with 14 in the 82 – 52 loss.
For the Lady Cubs, they took their first loss of the season, falling to Gruver. Gruver would go on and beat Canyon in their own tournament. The Ladies had Gabi Fields and Tia Johnson make the All Tournament Team. The Ladies went 2-1, defeating Wichita Falls Rider and Trinity Christian.
The Broncos and Lady Broncos played O’Donnell on Thursday and the Ladies jumped out to a huge lead over the Eagles. The Lady Broncs hit nine 3 pointers in the contest, before taking the win 71-47. The Lady Eagles scored only 16 points in the first half. K’Lynn Tarin and Fayth Haile both pitched in 19. Nyomi Alvarado followed with 12. Fayth had four 3-pointers in the first quarter.
On the boys side, the Broncos fell to O’Donnell 53 – 42 in a heated battle. The Broncos played tough and battled all the way. Kaleb Sanchez was the leading scorer for the Broncos with 12. Tate McBee and Taylor Caswell followed up with 8 a piece.
At Wellman-Union, both the Cats and the Lady Cats faced Southland. The Ladies jumped out to a lead and never looked back as they defeated the Lady Eagles 33 – 10. It was late in the third quarter before the Lady Eagles would hit a field goal. Madyson Horton would lead all scorers with 14, including four 3-pointers. Sadie Crowley followed up with 11.
The Cats had a tougher go with the Eagles. A close game all the way through found the Cats losing 42-38. The Cats played an outstanding game, holding the Eagles to only two points in the second quarter. Leading the way for the Cats was Levi DePoyster with 13. Toby DePoyster followed with 10.
The Cubs face Childress on Tuesday night at home, while the Lady Cubs face Monterey in a much publicized event that had tickets selling out within 45 minutes. The Cubs will play first at 6, and the Ladies will follow at 7:15.
The Cubs will be in the Tulia Tournament Thursday -Saturday. The Ladies will welcome Amarillo High on Saturday to The Pit, for a 1 p.m. game.
The Broncos and Lady Broncos will be facing Stanton at Stanton on Tuesday, and will head to Silverton on Friday, December 10.
The Cats and Lady Cats will both be at Sands on Tuesday night, and then head to the Plains Tournament Thursday – Saturday.
Another full week of basketball on hand for all our ballers!
