The Lady Cubs knew it would be a battle as they faced Idalou on Saturday at Lubbock in the Area Round of the volleyball playoffs. And it was a battle indeed.
The Lady Cubs came out swinging, winning the first set 25-19, with Idalou giving the Ladies everything they wanted. The next set was a marathon set, as it was set point six times before Idalou finally put it away 31-29.
The third set went to the Lady Cubs with a score of 25-18. The final set also went the Ladies’ way as they defeated Idalou 25-13 to clinch the match and earn the gold ball.
On the day, Gabi Fields had four aces and 26 assists. Meriah Gonzales had three aces, seven kills and 15 digs, while Brianne Franco had 16 digs. Deja Johnson had 16 kills and three blocks. Tia Johnson followed up with 11 kills, and four blocks.
Head Coach Mallorie Ellis stated, “The girls really came out ready to win on Saturday, Even though we made a few more errors than normal in the second set, the girls didn’t allow it to carry over into the third and fourth sets. I am very proud of them for being mentally tough by forgetting about errors, and focusing on the positives.”
The Lady Cubs will continue their playoff run at Friona on Tuesday, November 9, as they face Highland Park in the Regional Quarterfinals. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
