Tech Coach Chris Beard addresses BISD faculty

Brownfield ISD hosted the annual Convocation for Faculty and Staff on Monday morning, August 10 at the BHS Commons

Superintendent Chris Smith started the day off with a lighthearted talk designed to encourage and motivate the staff for the coming year. “We recognize that we are coming off the longest Spring Break ever,” stated Smith. “We know this year will have challenges and we have many unknowns but we also know that all of us will rise to the challenge.”

He then introduced the special guest speaker for the day, Texas Tech Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Beard. Beard also had with him Texas Tech Men’s Assistant Coach Mark Adams, who was a 1974 graduate of Brownfield High School.

Beard spoke about being more about the daily tasks than focusing on the finish. “We teach our players to focus on the process daily, rather than looking at the goal. We work on fundamentals every single day and we teach that through focusing on fundamentals, ultimately our goals are achieved.”

He urged the group to “live where your feet are. Be about what you are doing right now. Be all in, in all you do.”

Smith surprised Adams with a slide showing a case which will be placed in the new BHS Gym that will honor Adams for his time at BHS as a basketball player and student, as well as honoring his success as a collegiate coach.

Adams thanked Smith for the honor. “I am so humbled and overwhelmed with this. Brownfield will always be my home and I am proud to say I am from here. It was right here in this building that I learned so much about life and how to live. I am grateful for all those who invested in me in this building and in this community.”

BISD teachers started the year on Monday and will have instruction and time in their classrooms until classes begin on August 24.
