A mutation of the external structure of the COVID-19 virus, labeled the D614G mutation, has been identified by two different labs in the United States. Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Scripps Research Institute in Florida have both indicated that the mutation can make the virus 4-5 times more contagious. Bette Korber of the Los Alamos National Laboratory stated that the mutation is “of urgent concern” because it has become the most common strain spreading in the U.S. and Europe.
