Ribbon Cutting, First Pitch Opens Lady Cub Softball Field

It was a great night to be a Cub on Monday as the long awaited Lady Cub Softball Field saw its first pitch, following a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Work began on the new field in July of 2019 and culminated with Opening Day on Monday. A great crowd was in attendance to see the red ribbon cut by Head Coach Jeff Fabila, who is also a BHS graduate. Members of the Varsity Lady Cubs Softball team held the ribbon while Coach Fabila made the cut to the cheers of the crowd.

Members of the BISD Board of Trustees and Administration members threw out the ceremonial first pitches to members of the Lady Cubs squad. Free hot dogs were served to the crowd in the electric atmosphere that marked the evening. BISD Superintendent Chris Smith, who shows unwavering support for all BISD students, never stopped smiling as the evening unfolded. Smith stated, “The construction of a softball field has been an important initiative since we arrived. The value and pride we put in our female athletic programs is immeasurable and we hope that everyone takes pride in our new field.”

Oh, and there was a game to be played. And what a game it was! The Ladies were hosting Trinity Christian from Lubbock for this first official game in the new field. Jalen Franco took the mound for the very first pitch in the new ball park and worked her magic, along with Kamryn Martinez, who earned the save.

The Lady Cub bats were hot as Brianne Franco hit a blazing home run over the center field fence in her first at bat. Abcde Garza also homered on the way to a 14-4 victory over the Lady Trojans.

Coach Fabila was thrilled with the victory in the new ballpark and proud of his squad. “The girls played really well tonight and I was proud of their efforts. We always have room for improvement and we will keep working. These girls are proud of this field too. This ballpark will be one of the best playing surfaces in the area.”

The Lady Cubs will be hosting the Brownfield/Seminole Tournament on March 5-7. Don’t miss your chance to watch these girls, who recently earned a Number 5 Lone Star Varsity ranking in the area. They are going to be fun to watch!
