
With the final February 15 deadline to file for a School Board, City Council, or Mayor’s position passed, the final field for the candidates for each of those entities has been set.
Incumbents Russell Dial and Brad Woosley were the only two candidates to file for their seats on the school board so that election will be canceled with the two candidates assuming their positions for another three-year term. Woosley is currently serving as the board’s president, a position Dial held for a number of years.
However, that’s not the case with the City Council as four people have filed for the three positions that will expire in May. All three incumbents, which includes Joan Breith, Ronald Weir, and Robert Hanneman, have filed for another term of office. Joining the incumbents is former Chief of Police Jack Miller who turned in his paper-work on Wednesday. The three candidates receiving the highest number of votes will earn a seat on the Council.
No one filed to run against Mayor Tommy Hicks which will allow him to serve a 3-year term instead of the 2-year term he had served in the past.

If a resident has not registered to vote you still have time. Registration is currently underway at the Yoakum County Clerk’s office in Denver City or Plains through Thursday, April 4. Residents may also register online at VoteTexas.gov (http://www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/index.html).
Early voting through personal appearance is slated for Monday, April 22 through Tuesday, April 30 (business days only). A more definitive schedule of early voting times and locations will be made available in future editions of the Denver City Press.
