Terry County Commissioners ​​Court Met Today, Shattered Dreams Project ask for funding

The Terry County Commisioners Court met today in a regular scheduled meeting with the Shattered Dreams Project and Brownfield Fire Department on the agenda.

After the preliminary agenda items were out of the way, the Court moved to Item #6, which was to listen to a presentation from Brownfield High School student involved in the upcoming Shattered Dreams Project. Brownfield High School student and Area & Chapter President for FBLA Jeffrey Davis began the presentation of requesting funds for SDP and then what SDP is about. Davis explained that they will do a fake car accident that will be as close to real one as possible. This project is to show how distracted driving, also drunk driving can be detrimental to society and the impact it has on families and communities.

Brownfield High School student and President of NHS Cassidy Cooper explained where the funds they are requesting would go to. Cooper talked about the funding going towards the video project they will do for SDP and meals for those who are helping during this two-day project. Brownfield High School Student and President of the Student Council Abigail Ontiveros continued to explain the importance of this project and spoke about how the second day of the event will include parents of the students who will have a fake death in the project. Also one of the guest speakers during this event will be Jeannie Brown. Commissioner Mike Swain made the motion to explore how much funding Terry County will be able to give and it was seconded by Commissioner Kirby Keesee and was unanimously approved. The Court will come back at a later date to allocate the funding.

Item #9 was to discuss and take action on the sale of fireworks for Texas Independence Day. The Court decided with the lack of rain and moisture in the month of January and how the wind blows this time of year, the Court unanimously declined the sale of fireworks for Texas Independence Day.

The last item of business was the City of Brownfield Fire Department’s reports. The report that was given to the Court was the same as given to the Brownfield City Council on January 17th, 2019. (Click here for the related article.) There was a difference in the report given to the county versus the city and that is the number of calls that the fire department went on. On the report given to the city, it showed 199 calls and the one the county received showed 203, which is browken down to 115 calls for the city and 88 calls for the county. The report given was for information only, there was no action taken on the fire department report.

The meeting was ajourned and all commisioners and county judge was present. The next scheduled Terry County Commisioners Court meeeting will be on February 11th, 2019 at 10:00 AM in the Terry County Court House.
