Brownfield Lady Cubs & Runnin’ Cubs

The Lady Cubs had a nice few days off and probably much needed. The Lady Cubs began their second round of district last week when they took on Dimmitt at home and got a close 34-30 win. They did not play on Friday evening because they had a bye. Although they had a loss to Denver City the Friday before last, they are still in good shape and are playing well.

However, tomorrow night, Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, they travel up to Littlefield which is 8-0 in district action. The Lady Cubs fell at home to Littlefield in the first round 76-32. Unfortunately, Brownfield had some key players injured during that game. The Lady Cats most likely should be in the top 25, but they are not and will be a dark horse in Region I-3A playoffs. Playing in Littlefield has not been easy, so the Lady Cubs must tune out the crowd, get the offensive rebounds, and not turn the ball over so much.

The Lady Cubs will finish up the week at home against Lamesa on Friday, Jan. 26, 2023. Brownfield won against Lamesa in the first round of district 32-26. Lamesa will be looking for retribution when they travel here on Friday. As of now, Lamesa sits right behind Brownfield in third and also won over Denver City twice already, they have a four-point loss to Littlefield, at Littlefield, so they have some confidence coming in Friday night.

The Runnin’ Cubs have been doing very well. Last week they cracked the top 25 at number 19. However, the new poll released shows them at number 20. Last week Brownfield won over Dimmitt 87-50. Coach McPherson could’ve easily had the boys put 100 or more points on them. Every player on the team got to score and Jo Jo Carrillo had 35 of those 87 points.

Next up for the Runnin’ Cubs is Littlefield. Brownfield began district action against the Wildcats over a month ago winning 58-52. At that time, Littlefield came to Brownfield ranked #24. Now the Runnin’ Cubs get to travel tomorrow Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2023, up to Littlefield to take on a team, that only has three losses on the season and has not lost since playing Brownfield. Like that of the girls, Littlefield is a hard place to play. Last season, Brownfield lost 74-52 at Littlefield and then won at home.

The Runnin’ Cubs finish up the week at home against Lamesa. Brownfield won the first match 74-50 and could’ve easily put 90 up on the board. Lamesa seems to be having a down season compared to years past or just has not hit their stride. We’ll see.

District 3-3A Standings

Meadow Lady Broncos & Broncos

The Lady Broncos are most likely in one of the toughest districts in the state and their four losses in district have been at the hands of #7 Whiteface and #12 Whitharral. The Lady Broncos have held their own against their other district foes. Tomorrow night Meadow travels north to Amherst. The first time they played, the Lady Broncos won 58-21. This should a win for them. They round out the week with a bye on Friday to get some rest.

The Broncos are 1-5 in district and have the youngest group of ball players in the district. Two teams in District 7-1A, Morton and Whiteface will be joining the 2A ranks next season, so they have twice as many students to choose from. Like the girls, they will take on Amherst, who they lost to in their district opener. However, It was not a bad loss. The broncos have a chance to get another district win in the books tomorrow night. They will off Friday.

District 7-1A Standings

Wellman-Union Lady Cats & Wildcats

The Lady Cats continue to improve. This group of girls is probably the youngest in the district, with only one player that is a junior. So, as a young team in a district with Grady, Klondike, and Sands, which for the past decade or so, all three have been forced to be reckoned with, it is very tough for the Lady Cats. Wellman-Union travels over to Klondike to begin the second round of district action tomorrow night. The Lady Cougars are 5-0 in district whereas the Lady Cats are 2-3 but looking for a great upset win. They finish out the week and is doesn’t get easier as they take on Sands at home.

The Wildcats are a little bit like their cross-county rivals of Meadow. They are young as well. Also kind like the Lady Cats, the three teams Grady, Klondike, and Sands are always tough, especially Grady. However, this season the Loop Longhorns have come to disrupt the norm. This will be the fourth game in district for Wellman-Union when they travel to Klondike. Although Klondike is doing ok, the Wildcats can certainly ruin the Cougar’s night. The Wildcats will also end the week at home against Sands.
