Personality Profile: Tyler Mays – Integrated Pest Management Agent

by Eric

mays1Dennis Tyler Mays is the Extension Agent – Integrated Pest Management for this area.

He goes by Tyler and covers Terry, Yoakum, and Gaines counties.  While he has only been on the job here for eight months, he has been doing this type of work for almost four years.

When asked what an IPM agent does Tyler answered, “I work with farmers on making pest management decisions, educate farmers on what is going on in the area as far as crop production, and I also help the general public by answering question about issues with their trees or yard.”

Tyler grew up in Sweeny, Texas where he graduated high school in 2009. Afterwards he went to Texas A&M University – Kingsville where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 2013 and his masters in 2015.

TownTalk Radio asked Tyler why he chose to be an IPM agent and why he chose to work in this area. He said, “I love working in agriculture and helping people.  I chose this position because I fell in love with this part of Texas during an internship, plus where else can you say that you work in the largest cotton patch in the U.S. or (if not the) world.”

As a kid Tyler wanted to be a professional golfer. While in junior high he realized that wasn’t going to be possible and set his mind on becoming a golf course superintendent. It wasn’t until he got to college that he knew he wanted to pursue a degree in agriculture.

Tyler still enjoys playing golf but as a hobby now. His other hobbies include hunting, fishing, and of course collecting insects. He lives here in Brownfield with his dog he rescued two years ago.

Tyler is always willing to answer any questions you have about insects or diseases. Whether you have a garden or thousands of acres Tyler can answer your questions.

He can be contacted at (979) 482-0011 or (806) 637-4060. You can also stop by the Extension office at 209 S 5th St in Brownfield.
