Lady Cubs Shoot it Out in Denver City

The Brownfield Lady Cubs have come to play. That was very evident this past weekend at the Denver City Shoot Out Tournament. With weather threatening to become an issue, the Friday games were cancelled and as a result, the Lady Cubs played two games on Thursday and followed with two games on Saturday.

On Thursday morning, the Lady Cubs faced the Kermit Lady Jackets. The Lady Cubs won 41-34. In this game, Gaby Aviles was high point with 11 points.

Thursday afternoon, the hometown girls played the Dimmitt Bobbies. Lady Cubs came out on top by a score of 47-46.Gaby was again high point with 14 points.

Saturday morning found the Lady Cubs up against the Seminole Maidens who had previously beaten the Lady Cubs by over 40 points at the Pit. But Saturday was a different story, as father and son faced each other. Dickie Faught being the coach of the Seminole Maidens as well as the father to our own Lady Cub coach, Derek Faught. The game’s final result was the same however the score was quite different, 47-24 being the final score. The Lady Cubs played well the whole game with their defense really doing well at stopping Seminole. The Ladies showed much improvement over their previous game against the Maidens. Kori Holt was high point for this game with 7 points. She also had a great defensive outing against the Maidens.

The Lady Cubs then played in the 3rd place game against the host school. The rigor of playing two games in one day with very little rest between showed up as the Lady Mustangs were able to defeat the Lady Cubs easily. The final score was Lady Mustangs 43, Lady Cubs 26. The Lady Cubs had been the victor in the previous meeting between the two teams. Gaby was high point for this game.

All in all, it was a good tournament for the girls with a record of 2-2 for the tournament. The Lady Cubs have now won 4 games on the season which already equals the total number of wins for last season. The Lady Cubs are working hard and are heading in the right direction. Coach Faught recognized the improvement his squad showed this weekend and states that “The girls really worked hard during this tournament and showed a whole lot more of what we are capable of. Shot selection and making shots is still an area we need to work on, as well as blocking out and rebounding.”

Coach Faught recognized Senior, Kori Holt as his player of the tournament. “Kori is a player we have to have on the floor. She is our best defender and best rebounder.” states Faught.

The Lady Cubs will be at home on Tuesday, December 6 at 6:00 against the Muleshoe Lady Mules before heading to Stanton for the Stanton Hooptown Tourney on Thursday through Saturday. The Ladies will face Merkel in the first game of the tourney on Thursday afternoon at 3:00.
