BGCA looking at use of Alamo Events Center for its activities
Representatives of the local Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) met with city officials Thursday afternoon to discuss the donation of the Alamo Events Center to the BGCA for its purposes.
Representing the BGCA were members of the Building Committee which included Scott Jackson, John Fields, Glenn Waters, Steve Vaughn and Darrell Williams.
The Committee and the city officials agreed that the city would donate the building to the BGCA for its activities. However, should the BGCA cease to exist, ownership of the building would return to the city.
The agreement is contingent on approval from the Brownfield City Council.
During a meeting of the BGCA Board of Directors Tuesday night, the potential of getting the Alamo Events Center was the main topic of discussion.
“I think that, if everything goes down as I envision, the building could be utilized by the BGCA,” said Jackson, who is the Brownfield Parks and Recreation Director and has worked with juveniles in the past as part of the county’s Juvenile Probation Department.
“The building was originally purchased by the city for youth activities or to provide mentoring and academic and social activities for the youth. In the past the problem is that it has had to rely solely on volunteer help, and that didn’t work. The BGCA will hopefully do a better job of setting up programs with hired staff to better serve the youth of the community.”
The officers of the local BGCA include President Cheryl Vaughn, Vice President Betty Charlebois and Secretary Lupe Serna. A treasurer will be elected after the group receives its 501c3 status, which is being handled by local attorney Jimmy Hammons.
