Pickin’ ‘n Grinnin’ – Toe Tappin’ ‘n Hand Slappin’

I drove through Meadow a little after 9:30 Saturday night and noticed a number of cars coming over the tracks heading both north and toward Brownfield.

Oh, yeah—the Meadow Musical.

I decided to check it out, even though the hour was getting late, and was pleasantly surprised by all the cars still at the event. I had to park on the next block.

I love music, and although I’d rather have a little metal (yes, Aerosmith, Metallica, etc.), a little rock or even a little rock and roll, I have a general appreciation for almost all kinds of music. Too whiney or too out of tune does have a tendency to send shivers down my spine though.

I loved the atmosphere as I walked across to the Music Hall. Music absolutely filled the air. Besides the musicians playing on stage, a couple of musicians were on the porch outside the museum across the street and another group was in a side room of the Hall.

One guy would say, “Do you know this?” and start off; the others would join in and the result was so good that it sounded as if they had orchestrated the whole affair. Smiles were all around—on both players and listeners. It didn’t matter who the player was. Got an instrument? Know some tunes? Can play some chords? Join in.

One of the things I liked best was that everyone seemed so relaxed and at peace. I even found myself mellowing out.

Inside the Hall, the audience was having a blast. People were visiting, applauding the performers, dancing, laughing, smiling and singing along. Although the audience was basically older, there were younger people there too, even a few children who were having fun dancing and clapping along with their families.

I got to stay about thirty minutes before I needed to leave. I wished I could have stayed longer as there were more groups on the agenda to play and I felt so calm, but chores don’t do themselves and I had to go. As I left, I felt an urge to grab my guitar when I got home—just for a minute or two. Didn’t happen though. It is on my agenda for the near future—when I get caught up—when I get a chance. (Will it really happen? I’m not sure. There always seems to be something more urgent to do.)

I highly recommend the Meadow Musical though and plan to go back. It occurs the second Saturday every month. Maybe I’ll see you there.
