When did bald become beautiful?

I have a question: Just when did bald become beautiful?

For years I watched my hairline recede all the way to the middle of my head. I bemoaned the fact that I was losing my hair and was jealous of those who had a head full of hair with a hairline at the top of their forehead.

Back when I was young about the only popular actors who were bald-headed were Yul Brynner and Telly Savalas. Well, I guess that list should also include Curly Neal, one of the popular Harlem Globetrotters.

Somewhere along the way, however, more and more bald heads began to make their way into the public eye. It started to become popular to shave one’s head.

Even a former classmate of mine had shaved his head. Upon looking at my (slight) head of hair and my receding hairline he told me “don’t fight the inevitable. Just come on and join us.” With some special effects he could have sounded just like Darth Vader

I fought the fight as long as I could, to the point where my hair was less and less manageable. Then one day I decided to make the leap. I had someone with clippers shave my head down to a burr style.

Instead of looking cool like I had seen with so many other people with the shaved heads, I looked like an escapee from a POW camp. However, I decided this was the best look for me, so I’ve decided to stay “short on top.”

Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll ever look cool like Michael Jordan, Isaac Hayes, Stone Cold Steve Austin or any number of movie stars and big-time athletes and musicians who have adopted the bald look. I’ll just have to let the cool guys be cool and hope that I can fit in somewhere in between acceptable and pathetic.
